Ellison slams HP's CEO appointment

Sack the board while you’re at it
Mon Oct 04 2010, 12:45

ORACLE CEO Larry Ellison is "speechless" over HP's latest CEO appointment.

Ellison continued his criticism of HP in an email he fired off to the Wall Street Journal. The email attacked HP's appointment of ex-SAP chief Léo Apotheker to replace Mark Hurd, who HP had fired in August after accusations of sexual harassment and expenses fiddling. At the time, Ellison was critical of HP for sacking Hurd, and he ended up hiring Hurd at Oracle.

"I'm speechless. HP had several good internal candidates...but instead they pick a guy who was recently fired because he did such a bad job of running SAP," he told the Wall Street Journal.

Ellison's fury was stoked because Mr Apotheker was running SAP when he accused it of pilfering Oracle's intellectual property. Back in 2007 Oracle filed a lawsuit against SAP.

It claimed copyright laws were breached after SAP acquired a company called Tomorrownow, which was allegedly making dodgy copies of Oracle products. That case is due to see its day in court this November.

Being that Oracle, HP and SAP all compete at some level of their respective businesses, it's no wonder that their executives occasionally clash. When Ellison hired Hurd at Oracle, HP filed a lawsuit that got settled out of court.

"None of the HP board members own much HP stock so they have little to lose. But the HP employees, customers, partners and shareholders will suffer," Ellison continued.

Ellison ended his rant by urging the entire HP board to step down, saying, "The HP board needs to resign en masse ... right away. The madness must stop." µ

Ellison is at least lying that he's "speechless".

A plague on them all, but it's interesting to note this is supposedly because Apotheker was prez of SAP when it acquired another company that allegedly infringed Oracle. That's *so* distant a motive that Ellison appears to be a barely-controlled maniac, and that's certainly consistent with my view of The Rich; money and power makes 'em go CRAZY. Just imagine what a rich maniac like Ellison might do if he focused on you for some imagined slight. Whew. We've got to put a *lid* on these maniacs.

Who should resign?

When I first heard of this appointment, two things came instantly to mind. 1 - That HP would be looking to exploit Apotheker's SAP experience and 2 - That it was mainly done to piss off Ellison.

That Ellison has almost immediately taken the bait and had a good rant about it is hilarious and it's pretty much guaranteed the HP boardroom will be a giddy place indeed this afternoon!

One more appointment of this vain and we will be able to hear Ellison's head explode! Time to get the popcorn and some good water proofs as copious amounts of phlegm and ultimately blood flies!
