Wed Sep 15 2010, 09:16

LIVE BLOGGING will see this article updated every few minutes with the latest important info uttered by this morning's Nokia World speakers, Sir Tim "Yes I invented HTML for the web" Berners-Lee and Nokia's own mobile phones executive vice president Mary McDowell, assuming she hasn't resigned.

0917 In typical conference fashion its all starting late and there is no announcemenbt of what's with the delay

0923 Ludicrous video display has started, who cares where's the beef?

0925 Mark Selby, vp industry collaboration speaking, giving a precis of what is going on today and introducing this morning's two keynote speakers

0929 Berners-Lee speaking quickly and in an animated manner about how the world wide wait began. He is talking up open standards and the openness of the web and how that can help people develop apps especially for location. Is going on a lot about location awareness, and putting data on the web is Tim's big new focus

0934 There is an ongoing project to put UK government data on the web while Tim wants scientific data out there. I wonder how the University of East Anglia's climate change team will feel about that?

0935 Tim likes to use the web for flight delay updates, and he says apps are best when there is plenty of data and standard APIs help too. RDF link standards are a plus too. More apps mean more incentive for data and its all a virtuous circle, apparently. Tim says he's really excited about data on the web. He might want to cut down on the caffeine.

0938 points of interest standards is a big thing at W3.org now, semantic web, linked web, is going to make augmented reality an everyday thing. He sees augmented reality as a great driver for data needs with locations becoming associated with data such as what it is, a church, is the example he is giving, what religion, when are there servces etc

0941 Tim is bigging up HTML5 for online video and scalable vector graphics. HTML5 and VSG will enable video shown in different formats such as an ellipsoid, spinning, that's the example Tim gives. Is advising online data etc is compatible with many devices - can I get paid a lot of money for giving this advice?

0943 Tim is talking about his concerns. Privacy. How do your users know where that data will end up? How do you let the user know what will happen to the data? Doesn't Tim know companies don't want you to know? Tim thinks responsible companies will build systems that respect people because that is how they will keep customers. Best of luck with that

0948 Net neutrality means you can go anywhere, no net neutrality wil wreck that, people could not set up a website anywhere and see it succeed through word of mouth, blogging etc. The end of net neutrality will end innovation in Tim's view.

0953 Not being on the web, part of the info society is going to be a big problem for people in the future

0955 SMS is the most expensive way of sending data, we need a better system

0956 Tim has stopped, it was sort of like watching a scientific version of Tourettes

0957 Mary McDowell, mobile phone vp is now talking. 80% of the world's population now near a cell tower, is expecting a wireless future. Mobile phone is interweb gateway and emerging countries are "blossoming," Nokia can do good business for good says Mary. Try telling that to Foxxconn employees and their experience of consumer electronics

1001 Giving example of Indian small businss woman who uses her mobile phone to help her do business. Nokia has "hyper-local" approach and that includes symbols instead of text so the illiterate can use Nokia products. But how do they find out what symbol means what?

1004 Nokia C3 getting bigged up as "amazingly affordable" while providing SMS and email. Dual SIM phones Nokia C1 and C2 launched because of that and there are more dual SIM products to come. Nokia X3 touch and type, announced last month, offers traditional keypad with touchscreen and went on sale on Monday, sales "quite strong" which probably means they were disapointing. The C3 will be available later this year with a price of €145

1007 Ovi browser in beta and uses novarra technology, the Ovi browser is designed for varied display sizes and allows for more scrolling and less clicking

1010 Mary is talking about Nokia money app enabling business and personal transactions in the developing world, in India. Are extending service to a second Indian city. Planning to extend Nokia money across India and other countries. Mary is also bigging up Ovi mail and how 14 million have activated it. Ovi chat to be hosted by Yahoo

1013 Important news now apparently. Mary has been joined on stage by the CEO of Intuit, Alex Linter. Nokia and Intuit announcing software service for small businesses that use mobile phones as a business tool. This will incorporate location services and of course Ovi maps. Mary's talking about responding to customers needs, blah blah blah

Its all over
