NO OFF OPTION for Google Instant's Autocomplete function is causing havoc for some users and since Instant's 8 September launch the company's help forum has seen hundreds of complaints.
While users have the option of switching off the predictive text based search system that is Instant they can't switch off Autocomplete, which was Google Suggest until Instant was launched. Users have found that Instant's Autocomplete interferes with the autocomplete on their browser stopping it from recalling usernames and other data for frequently visited websites. One user also reported that their background picture disappeared.
In response to the initial complaints Google Employee Kelly F. wrote, "As Autocomplete quality has improved, we felt it was appropriate to have it always on for all of our users." Asking Google UK what it had to say The INQUIRER was given a comment that essentially repeats Kelly F's response.
Users can avoid Instant Autcomplete if they sign out of their Google account but that is not a popular solution, unsurprisingly. Other users found that switching on private browsing helped but not for all browsers.
INQUIRER reader Vince Runza wrote, "Yes, you can turn off Google Instant. The autocomplete function, however, is mandatory for everybody. It's annoying and messes up your own browser's auto-complete function."
The lack of any off function recalls the public relations disaster Google had with its background images. µ
The search box is tiny and is designed for basic searches or for people who don't know how to search for exactly what they are after. It also takes up URL space.
Recent Google UI changes have been a nightmare;
fade in

Every browser in the known universe has a search box built in, most of which will allow you to disable autocomplete or even use an alternate search engine entirely. It astounds me that the vast majority of people still wait for the homepage to come up and then type their search into *whatever* box happens to be in their field of vision. Wake up and use your browser as God intended it! Silly, silly people...
now a Facebook application on YouTube Instant :

Switched to using IXQuick a long time ago, mainly because of the privacy issues. Time has proved that a good choice, as Google seem to be hell-bent on rendering their core product unusable.
The founders of Cuil must be rubbing their hands with glee...
... should have a feature to translate Google into English.
For example:
Google: As Autocomplete quality has improved, we felt it was appropriate to have it always on for all of our users.
English: Autocomplete is so insanely great, youd have to be an idiot not to want it! So screw you!
On the other paw, this attitude hasnt done Apple any harm, so...
Seems like since Google isn't really following the "Don't be evil" saying anyway maybe they should set their sights a bit lower and aim for something like "Don't assume everyone always wants the same experience." Choice is good. Empower your user-base and they will love you for it.
Point your browser to www.google.com/firefox and get rid off all that crap
There is a very easy and reliable Firefox Addon: "HeaderControl". Simply, add a new rule to report any strange user agent name of your choice (I choosed "GOOD_OLD_GOOGLE_USER_INTERFACE") to the www.google.com domain (or your country google domain).
From this moment, the image search defaults to the good old one, and the stupid slow initial blank page dissapears (yes, this method is also useful to show the good old FULL initial search page). In addition, there are no search suggestions (you can turn them off in the Settings).

I went to use google this weekend at home, it kept bringing up crap. Rather than spend one second dealing with their mess I used yahoo and found exactly what I was looking for right away.
MS adds pointless clicks to their OS and Google is adding them to a great search tool. F that, I have other things to do.
of unexpected interactions will destroy the world. That's the reason to keep everything simple and manual. I suspect that M$ has a centrol role to play in Armageddon.
By the way, Malthus *will* be right some day.
... people are this stupid!
Is that hard to see "Instant is on ▼" on the right side of the search box?
