Adobe goes for HTML5

Gotta keep developers happy
Mon Sep 13 2010, 11:55

SOFTWARE OUTFIT Adobe has added an HTML5 pack for its Illustrator CS5 program.

Adobe is fighting tooth and nail against Apple for not providing Flash support. But the company is also in the awkward position of having to give developers and designers access to the latest graphics technology. This means it has no option but to offer HTML5 support if it wants to stay on top of the markets for mobile device and web content creation software.

Adobe said that this pack supports HTML5 and CSS3 while extending scalable vector graphics (SVG) in Illustrator. The company even promotes HTML5 by saying that open standard support gives developers more control over their content. The old Adobe might not have said such a thing.

Adobe claimed the HTML5 pack should provided better integration for Illustrator and Dreamweaver. SVG written in Illustrator should also be displayed correctly in compatible browsers and can create CSS code for building HTML content.

"Producing graphical web content that can be viewed across mobile devices has been tricky, with devices varying greatly when it comes to screen size and performance," said Lea Hickman, senior director of creative and interactive solutions at Adobe.

"The HTML5 Pack for Illustrator CS5 gives designers and developers the power to deliver high-quality graphic content for the web that can look great, no matter what the screen."

The HTML5 pack for Illustrator is available to download free from Adobe Labs. µ

no escaping it then!!!

As I said months ago, you may have escaped flash and all the problems with it, but adobe will just produce the SAME STUFF, and just use HTML5... :) :)

It will be 'HTML5' in name only, due to the popularity of the name, but I will bet it will use all manner of 'container video' and CSS, JS, to do just the same that flash has always done.....

Adobe In a Unique Position

Adobe is still in a unique position to deliver tools that write HTML5 based conent in a visual way. Flash Profesional content creation can be infused with a new publishing option that exports a package the will be HTML5 and Flash swf to fill in any gaps. Flash will be on the decline so they need to keep their tools relevent on the browser. I say browser because Flash could still be strong on kiosks and other cunsumer devices. But they better get moving in order to keep ahead of the next up start on the market.
