Hackers reveal an IOS 4.1 jailbreak
JUST HOURS after Apple released the latest version of its Iphone operating system, coders have managed to figure out ways to jailbreak it.
The Iphone Dev team had already said a while back that it had started to put all its effort on jailbreaking IOS 4.1 and it seems that Apple might have trouble plugging the security hole this time around. Talented hackers have managed to get around Apple's restrictions by exploiting a hole in the boot ROMs of Apple's Iphone and Ipod Touch devices.
As this is a boot ROM exploit, IOS is not in the loop, with one developer having already confirmed that the hack works on Iphones that run IOS 4.1. The upshot of this is that a simple firmware update will be unlikely to patch things up and this could mean that Apple will be forced to modify its hardware should it want to stop jailbreaking.
Various Iphone hackers have confirmed the viability of the latest jailbreaking exploit, meaning that it won't be long before a 'production release' hits the Internet. It makes you wonder about Apple's technical prowess, given the restrictions that it likes to put on the Iphone. But who's to complain? After all, Apple's incompetence is its users' gain.
This time it looks like Apple won't be able to merely release another software patch to cover up its failings. µ

Unless the boot ROM is actually flash ROM, in which case Apple would have some eggheads analyse and repair the bug and then push a reflashing update.
Assuming it's a flash ROM chip, and not something that was irreversibly blown at the factory.
Once Apple fixes its broken Iphone antenna, the only major drawbacks to having one of these toys would be:
1) The (high) price
2) Being forcibly confined to Apple's "walled garden" money-sucking, ahem, I mean "eco"system.
3) No user-serviceable/replaceable/expandable parts (including the battery and memory).
At least drawback #2 could be addressed by Google releasing a version of Android that "just happens" to run on the Iphone's ARM processor (that should not be too difficult). Then let's see Jobs try and control his customers.
But an even better way to go might be to avoid Apple products altogether, and use Android or Meego handsets that the user -- not Steve Jobs -- can control.
Well it's great, the DevTeam up the ante and start going down to that level, Apple will just manufacture the iPhone 5 so that it will never be able to be jailbroken, like the recent PSP's can't run hacked custom firmware. Sad times

If Apple is so superior as to not get Viruses, Malware, Etc why aren't they able to keep out the hackers?
Hackers exploit Apple products almost before they come out. Apple is the first to fall at hacker conventions and through arrogance nothing is looking for Hackers once the devices are compromised.
Apple has to be the most insecure products on the market and they dont even know they were hacked.
First of all - Apple's failings?
That's about equal to saying Pentagons security is failing.
There is No secure system. It's not a failure to have security flaws.
It's a failure to not cement those holes.
Further - Also note that Apple from today also allows 3rd party developer tools - ROM JB + Freedom to use 3rd party = Future compiler on the iPhone.
We truly are living in the best of times.
(As a brilliant cockslap, Android devs can now freely port all and any software straight over - While the other way around isn't equally true ^_^)
To the author, Apples failings? If so and people like u or I still hav to hav 1, it's testament to wat mad devices these really are/can be. Think about it! If all focus was on to deny root privileges... No one would giv to roots about no boot Roms cos it would be as sophisticated as a cellular leap frog- no wifi standard u seem to be begging for. Be glad they've put together something worthwhile jailbreakin and not gettin cocky u got more than wat apple intended, jailbreak is a luxury not an inheritance. Let's face it, most would still buy an iPhone even if jailbreak was not an option, I kno I did, but.. I eagerly await a jailbreak tool for 4.!.

while apple will close jailbreaking exploits that are a true security risk (like the jailbreakme.com Safari one), they never make it impossible. I think it's a little game they play to stay out of legal trouble by saying they close exploits when found. But if people keep buying their phones, why would they really care? All this back and forth between Apple and the dev teams responsible for the jailbreaks gets Apple more publicity from articles like this one than an iOS release on its own would.
Finally, DevTeam cracked the iOS boot. I am literally on my way to get my first Iphone.
I just wonder how long it's gonna take for them to release it
