Apple releases IOS 4.1 to fix faults

Iphone 3G users get their phone back
Thu Sep 09 2010, 12:39

PHONE MAKER TO THE FASHION BRIGADE Apple has released the latest version of its Iphone OS in a bid to fix a number of hardware and software faults.

Since IOS 4.0 made its debut with the Iphone 4, the cappuccino company has been under siege as fanbois complained of problems with the phone's reception, proximity sensor, Bluetooth connectivity, movie software, email synchronisation and a raft of other issues. Apple laid the blame for much of this squarely on its software division, backing up its claims with some very questionable reasoning. This was shortly followed by reports that Iphone 3G users found that their phones ground to a halt thanks to IOS 4.0, suggesting that not only did Apple debut a faulty phone but duff software as well.

Although Apple did release IOS 4.0.1, that update amounted to little more than jiggery-pokery to try to fool fanbois into buying Apple CEO and spin-meister Steve Jobs' argument that the Iphone 4's reception problems were due to signal strength 'bars' being incorrectly calculated. While IOS 4.0.1 might have been little more than a software sleight of hand, IOS 4.1 does seem to address security and functionality issues.

Reports are that Apple has finally managed to fix the duff Iphone 4 proximity sensor and Bluetooth connectivity seems to be much improved. Iphone 3G users are also reporting that their devices are usable again, though it seems that some fanbois are not all that trusting of Saint Steve's latest software update, with one saying "I'm still fearful to try 4.1. I've been tempted to smash my iPhone into a wall more than once since switching to 4.0.1. The keyboard is so slow sometimes it's ridiculous. Safari takes FOREVER to load. Apps crash pretty much every time. Especially if I've used them longer than two minutes." We're hearing you loud and clear brother.

Aside from the fixes, IOS 4.1 brings in support for Apple's music oriented social notwork, Ping and games matchmaking service, Game Center. While fanbois might get excited about letting others track their music habits and wade through the numerous scam artists that have suddently made Ping their new home, Game Center is likely to cement the Iphone and Ipod Touch as the portable Apple gaming devices of choice.

There's also an update to the camera application that allows high dynamic range (HDR) photos to be created. If fanbois are feeling particularly flush, unlikely given the cost of an Iphone, movie rentals are now available.

One wonders, if Bluetooth and proximity sensor issues were indeed relatively simple software fixes, why did Apple release a headline product with such basic faults? Then again, history tells us that testing has never been Apple's forte, though that may have to change after a report by analysts Piper Jaffray, one of Apple's most fervent supporters, said that 20 per cent of respondents were put off buying the Iphone 4 due to its faulty antenna.

That said, fanbois should be over the moon with the fact that Saint Steve has even bothered to address issues such as Iphone 3G performance. After all those patrons made their donations to the cult over two years ago. Who knows, maybe Apple's newfound sense of charity will lead to a recall for all those faulty Iphone 4s? µ

Reports

There are plenty on reports now about the update and how it doesn't fix the sensor or blue tooth.

Get a grip...

Seriously... I don't know why I even bother to read articles on this website anymore. I'm neither an Apple 'fanbois' or a hater, I just like to keep up to date with stuff like this. These articles are so irritating now, your reporting would be more suited to a highschool playground.

Get a grip... I know you guys hate Apple but you're here to give tech news right?

You're all tools

"What kind of journalistic integrity do you still have left..." "Wow Lawrence thanks for setting the bar even lower.."

All of you neeed to seriously get off your soapboxes and realize you came to a site called the Inquirer for your IT news you should expect some witt, sarcasm, outright lies, jokes, and opinionated pieces. No one said you had to read this stuff, especially if you have no sense of humor, wear a black turtleneck, and have had Job's, Gates/Ballmer or Linus's pole in your mouth for years.

What are you 5 years old?

Is the author seriously 5 years old?

What kind of journalistic integrity do you still have left after writing this pathetic attempt to slag off Apple?

I'm not a fanboy but it amuses me that someone who writes for a living would write something like this. Get over yourself, buy whatever you want. No-one really cares.

Last but not least, get out and get a life. Maybe even a girlfriend.

I guess everyone is a fanbois

Wow Lawrence thanks for setting the bar even lower on this site. Seems like if you just own the product you are a fanbois. Your grade 6 education is finally paying off!

Wrong about 3g

You have badly missed the point that as little as 3 months ago people could and were buying the 3g still. Apple owe4d it to these customers to fix their effectively bricked phones.

Could you be more of an ass?

Your article would have read just fine with providing the details about the IOS 4.1 release instead of all the ridiculous "fanbois" comments. Instead you just come across as a d--- that seems offended by consumers liking a particular brand.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
