HP shrinks a server

Proliant microserver for small business
Thu Sep 09 2010, 10:52

MAKER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK HP has released a Proliant microserver for small businesses that the company claims offers the features of its larger servers.

From its home media servers to enterprise kit, HP has its fingers in every server pie thanks to its Just Right IT marketing approach. The idea is that the company offers choice, choice and more choice so it doesn't fail to exploit any niche for potential revenue.

The Proliant microserver is HP's attempt to take a mid-sized business server and zap it with a shrink gun to offer the same features and security set to small companies with less than ten workers. The server should let employees access and share business critical information rather than relying on desktops or laptops.

It's not just a figurative shrink, apparently. The HP Proliant microserver is half the size of standard servers. HP also claims it is 50 per cent quieter with lower power consumption that the company reckons uses 150 Watts less than full-sized entry level servers.

However, like standard servers, it offers enhanced security, pluggable drives, flexible storage and lower cost of ownership through shared IT equipment.

"Small businesses have traditionally relied on interconnected PCs to share files and resources, which doesn't help them keep pace with a competitive environment," said Jim Ganthier, HP's VP of marketing for industry standard servers.

"Leveraging over 20 years in server leadership and innovation, HP is introducing a no-compromise, compact server designed to fit into office environments with a versatile appearance and quiet operations."

The microserver is quite affordable, priced at just $329 in the US. HP hasn't announced a UK price yet but don't expect that to be based on the exchange rate, as we guess it will likely be about £329. µ

HDD capacity?

HP don't tell us anywhere how many 2.5/3.5 HDD slots / power connectors there are. Most important info of all I would have thought...great it comes with a single 160 GB disk which will be thrown away almost instantly...
