Scuppered in Belgium

INSPECTOR KNACKER of the Belgium Yard has fingered the collars of ten blokes it thinks were involved in a 'piracy' ring.

According to the Associated Press, the ten were arrested in raids across Europe against hackers who put illegal copies of movies and television series on the Internet.

Five of the arrests were in Belgium, and the computer crime unit led an operation that required the help of 12 other countries including Britain, Germany and France.

Belgium Police spokeswoman Tine Hollevoet said people were arrested in Poland, Norway and Sweden, in addition to Belgium.

The coppers were pretty sure they got the ring leaders of four networks and they shut down 48 servers distributing illegal material.

In Belgium, the suspects were charged with membership in a criminal organization, computer fraud, hacking and copyright infringement.

Yesterday we reported that The Pirate Bay servers were taken down, so it has been a bad week for those who want to download TV shows and films without paying the industry cartels the slightest bit of attention. µ

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
