TWO DUAL CORE CHIPS from Qualcomm with clock speeds of 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz will find their way into devices next year.

The 1.2GHz dual core 8260 chip will go into volume production for customers in the first half of 2011 while the company says that its 1.5GHz dual core 8672 processor will tip up in devices from next July.

After giving the Qualcomm innovation day keynote speech, the company's CEO Paul Jacobs told the audience that the 8672 will ship in the first quarter 2011 but that date was retracted by the company later. Spokespersons gave The INQUIRER dates for volume production and customer device manufacture, however, given the lead times that chips have for being provided to manufacturers the new information does not contradict Jacobs' statement.

Next year will also see Qualcomm ship its 800MHz 7X30 and 1GHz 8X65 chips to customers, and sampling is already underway. These chips use the new Adreno 205 GPU. This boasts the ability to process 45 million pixels per second against the original Snapdragon 8250 chip's Adreno 200 GPU's performance of 22 million pixels per second. The Adreno 205 achieves this by having one core dedicated to 3D graphics and another to 2D. µ
