Ipod web usage is falling

But Iphone rallies marketshare
Tue Sep 07 2010, 15:12

GEWGAW PIONEER Apple is rallying against the increasing use of handsets by other manufacturers.

In figures just published by Quantcast the cappuccino company is shown to have increased its marketshare - at least for Iphone mobile web usage - in the last month, apparently steadying itself against increased competition.

Although you might suspect that no one would admit to not using an Iphone at all times and for every conceivable event, this is not the case, and indeed Quantcast's analysts found that at least in terms of mobile web access, the Ipod was in decline.

The firm's yearly graph show that Apple's market share has declined across both the Iphone and Ipod Touch devices, albeit with a rally from the former, while HTC, Motorola and Samsung are all on ascending trends. Blackberry's market share is also declining, and like Apple's it shows a line on the graph that should appeal to novice skiers.

Yearly, the future looks most rosy for Motorola, as over the period it increased its share of North American mobile web users by 11 per cent. Meanwhile, taking Apple's Iphone and Ipods together, Apple shows a drop of around 12 per cent.

Quantast said that despite a continued fall in the use of its Ipod devices, Apple's Iphones rallied towards the end of the year, suggesting that the outlook is not as bleak for the non-Android devices as we might have thought. "As we can see, the iPhone put in a solid performance in August 2010", the firm added. "The Iphone has seen a solid reversal of its downward trend since the introduction of the iPhone 4, however, this is offset for iOS share by the decline of the iPod Touch."

Annually, HTC and Samsung joined Motorola in making gains, while the Blackberry sits beside Apple at the losers table. µ

Adding tablets...

Well, not sure if some of the recent Android phones count as pocket-sized, but yeah - let's add all the millions of Android and Windows tablets to the mix, too. That'll make a huge difference.

The whole premise of the research is a bit confusing, anyway. They allow the iPod Touch, even though it's not a smartphone - therefore they aren't just measuring mobile network access. So what exactly ARE they trying to measure?

Looking at their methodology (linked in the original article), the justify the omission of the iPad thus:

--------

Is the iPad included in mobile? No, we do not count the iPad as a mobile device. This is a judgment call and we fully expect that over time the distinction between device classes will continue to blur and these decisions will get even harder (as they will with the forthcoming slew of Android tablets). As mobile becomes a more significant portion of all web consumption and as more devices appear we may drop the distinction and shift solely to total web consumption share (if you have thoughts on this please let us know).

If a Quantcast chart shows iOS in respect of mobile web consumption, then it includes both iPhones and iPod Touch devices, but not iPads.

---------------

So I'm not sure how useful this data is, or what it's supposed to demonstrate.

The data is okay, but the article missed to...

...state, that the graph represents pocket-sized devices. If you want to throw in Ipad, why don't you throw in anything from tablets running android all the way up to the ones running Win7.

At CrashPad

They aren't brainwashed in anyway. All they are saying to the author is that these statistics are incomplete and they shouldn't be publishing articles without all the information, as it makes the point invalid. I bet if the article missed information on someone else, and the comments complained...no one would talk about brainwashing. It would be like comparing sales the apple and android app stores, and ignore all data from HTC android phones. It wouldn't be truly representative.

You Apple fanbois sound like parrots

What do they take you aside and plug you into the Apple machine for daily brainwashing, Man time to think different, this devotion is misplaced, and really starting to creep folks out.

Not an accurate picture w/o Ipads

Without the Ipad the data is inaccurate. no wonder there are news you can't trust

Umm... where's the iPad data?

I don't see how you can look at this sort of data and yet ignore the iOS iPad - which is kinda designed for browsing. Come back when you have it, and then we'll see what the chart looks like.

What about iPads?

I know many iPhone and iPod owners that have moved their browsing to the iPad. How about some more complete statistics!
