TROUBLED PHONE MAKER Nokia is hoping that its product announcements next week will reassure the world that it is back on track.
According to Reuters, while Nokia still makes the most phones in the world its profits have taken a dive.
There is a lot riding on its next products, including the career of CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.
At the top of the range is the flagship model E7, which comes with a large touchscreen and full keyboard. Nokia will also release a new N8 model, which will run on the Symbian^3 software.
While the N8 has a 12 megapixel camera it has a slower processor than Samsung's top model Galaxy S smartphone and even gets beaten by the Apple A4 processor in the Iphone 4.
At the heart of Nokia's problems is that it needs to convince the world plus dog that it has fixed Symbian and that the result is a lot better than Android, RIM, Windows Mobile 7 and something more fruity.
Nokia's Symbian is seen as being a bit long in the tooth and has failed to attract much interest from developers. This means that it is short of software in comparison with its newer rivals.
CEO Kallasvuo promised that the usability of Nokia's Symbian smartphones would not be a problem by the end of this year. Maybe that will be because the outfit will have gone back to making rubber. µ
Many of those apps *are* available for Symbian - NetFlix, check; ebooks, check; games - check. Symbian^3 is backward compatible with Symbian^1 so that many (most?) currently available apps will work on the N8. Only with Symbian^4 will Symbian^1 support be dropped.
So yes, Symbian can do all of the above.
Bet you didn't know about that, bet you didn't want to know about that. After all, Symbian is a dog if you're a fan of Android or iPhone and you only just heard of Symbian last week.
Some people here really are clueless.
Doesn't matter; it's all about applications. An iPhone can stream movies from Netflix; Pandora streaming; Ebooks; high quality games.
Nokia makes nice *phones*, if all you need is a phone, but it can't do any of the above.
More people are looking for a do-all multi media device and PDA... that just happens to make calls and text, which knocks Symbian phones out of the conversation.
Well, Symbian is well known for his fragmentation between devices.
We CANNOT UPGRADE THE OS !!
WHAT A F___k NOKIA!"
I prefer LINUX ALWAYS !
Why NOKIA sell n900 at 3 times a NETBOOK ?
Why NOKIA sell n96 at 3 times a NETBOOK and CANT make a VOICE IP CALL over gTALK ?
BOTTOM LINE
Nokia should change his policy. Should STOP selling products with PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE!

There are a ton of people that don't buy cellphones because they only want the phone part. My dad was dragged, kicking and screaming, into buying a text message package. He has unlimited texting now, and uses it casually to plan bike rides and stuff mostly. The phone has Internet access, which they avoid as if it's pork and they're Jews. My dad claims we'll get a hefty bill if someone even accidentally downloads a web page, not sure how true that is.
What people need is a phone that's dead simple with all the features off to the side. If they want extra stuff, they can add it themselves at their leisure, hopefully in a way that keeps them from adding stuff accidentally.
There is a huge market of older people who just want to be able to call people when outside their house. I've seen a phone that caters to that in Discover magazine, but nobody seems to know about it.
Can't we just have a damn phone?
"I have been a Nokia fan for years and after I bought my iphone, Nokia looks stupid due to the constraints it had."
You moan about Nokia having constraints, yet you own an Apple device? LOL
"Why Nokia is going for dead OS why not use Android which is of course free."
You obviously don't have a clue. Anyone that is suggesting Nokia cut their own throats by choosing Android knows nothing about the mobile industry or what Nokia have planned.
As for the author of this article, the N8 is a mid-range device which explains why it's CPU isn't top of the line (that will come with the MeeGo based N9) however it's interesting to note that in GLBenchmark1.1 tests the N8 is on a par with the iPhone4 (yes, the latest and greatest Four) and in many cases is better than virtually all Android handsets including the Galaxy S.

Also, Nokia don't need to convince developers to develop for Symbian, they only need to convince them to develop for Qt... Ed, do you know what Qt is?
The problem lies with Nokia itself. They failed to gather developers when it's OS was high.
They even forgot to reconstruct their OS. It was a terrible mistake.
I have been a Nokia fan for years and after I bought my iphone, Nokia looks stupid due to the constraints it had.
Why Nokia is going for dead OS why not use Android which is of course free.
Nokia don't be stupid and stubborn follow the crowd you will reach you goal. If you continue like this we may say THERE WAS NOKIA.
