DISGRACED FORMER HP CEO Mark Hurd has been appointed as Oracle's president.
Earlier this week we revealed how Hurd had been seen at Oracle with his CV and best suit on, waiting outside Ellison's office. It turns out that he was not up for the messenger boy job after all, but something a bit higher.
Hurd gets to join Oracle's board of directors and have access to a new expense account, so he can take his bodyguard out to dinner whenever he likes.
He has replaced co-president Charles Phillips, who is going on to greener pastures after having a scandal if his own involving a former mistress.
For those who came in late, Hurd was fired from HP for the alleged lapse of having fiddled his expenses over taking a former soft porn star out to dinner, who accused him of sexual harassment, and covering it up.
At the time Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison slammed HP's board of directors, saying Hurd's firing was as daft as Apple getting rid of Steve Jobs, back in the mists of time.
Oracle's press release has Larry telling the world plus dog that "Mark did a brilliant job at HP and I expect he'll do even better at Oracle."
Hurd made a large number of job cuts at HP and claimed a huge bonus for the experience. However HP's fortunes turned up subsequently, at least from a short term perspective.
Ellison said that there is no executive in the IT world with more relevant experience for Oracle than Hurd.
He said that Hurd pioneered the integration of hardware with software when Teradata was a part of NCR. Now that Oracle is trying to do the same thing with Sun, Hurd's experience will enable Oracle to beat IBM in both enterprise servers and storage, Ellison reckoned.
"I'm excited to be a part of the most innovative technology team in the IT industry," Hurd reportedly said.
Meanwhile, we think he's lucky to have found another executive job in the IT industry so soon. It must pay to have billionaire friends, we guess. That makes for soft landings, it would seem.
There is no news about what Hurd plans do at Oracle other than dark hints about software and hardware integration. µ
Blaming capitalism for the corruption of induhvidual businessmen is pretty stupid. I know, we can fix that so easily by simply changing to socialism. That way, nobody has any motivation OR money - well, except for the elite ruling class.
There is a reason immigrants want to come to America, and why it is commonly referred to as the greatest nation on earth - freedom. If you don't like it, go somewhere else as there are plenty of options.
And they're becoming pretty brazen at rewarding cronies. -- I predicted here that the scandal wouldn't end Hurd's career, might even enhance it, but I didn't see it coming so soon. No matter how cynical I get, I'm still behind.
