O2 releases Android 2.1 update for Dell's Streak
MOBILE OPERATOR O2 has rolled out Android 2.1 for Dell Streak users in the UK.
Dell's 5-inch Android smartphone tablet had been using the archaic Android 1.6 operating system since its launch. Dell has announced that Android 2.2, the current version of the Linux based operating system, will be arriving for its Streak at some point this year though it would not be drawn on specifics. So you can imagine the disappointment when users today were treated to a version that was debuted nine months ago and lacks Adobe Flash support.
Android 2.1 does bring some new features to Streak owners, with O2 pointing out that 720p video recording, improved multi-touch support and increased performance are all included. It also means that users can now enjoy applications that were designed for devices running Android 2.0 or newer.
Given the confusion and frustration that is reigning on its forums, we tried to get hold of the firm for a definitive answer. Alas we were first told that representatives were out to lunch, and presumably after downing a few bottles of Bolly celebrating the firm's rise back to number 2 in the sales charts, they apparently couldn't be bothered to get back to us.
With Samsung readying its Android 2.2 running Galaxy Tab for an October release, Streak owners will be hoping that the increased competition will jolt Dell into releasing Android 2.2 before it goes stale. µ

The Dell Streak update to 2.1 can only be described as an unmitigated disaster.
The update breaks a number of functions, PC sync now doesn't work, battery usage is reduced from 2 days to 6 hrs.
Dell need to get 2.2 sorted and released quickly. Oh but can you make sure it works before sending this time?
