Craigslist discontinues erotic ads in the US

Could be due to legal pressure
Mon Sep 06 2010, 12:34

THE MOSTLY FREE online classified ads service Craigslist has stopped listing erotic ads in the US, probably caving in to legal pressure.

The Inquirer reported last month that the online classified ads network faced calls to shut down its adult services adverts. The company was accused of being little more than a knocking shop at best. At worst, it was allegedly used to advertise child sex trafficking.

The original request to close Craigslist cited the case of a 17 year old girl who was used as a child prostitute through ads placed on the network.

A day after we filed that story, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster responded in a blog post.

He wrote, "We have been unable thus far to identify police reports matching the crimes you describe. If Craigslist was misused, we want to learn more so we can improve our preventative measures."

Buckmaster also suggested that the company's advertising was being used as a scapegoat but it was apparently too little, too late. The company has closed down the erotic advertising space with the US website displaying a temporary "censored" bar.

According to the Wall Street Journal, no one knows if the adult ads will remain censored or if it will affect any of Craigslist's other domain websites. X-rated ads still appear on its websites in countries outside the US.

The company hasn't lost a legal battle and could still see its day in court. The argument of being only an intermediary by hosting the ads means that it might not be culpable for any abuses. It is a legal technicality but that might the only defence that could work in court. It is almost the same line that bit-torrent filasharing websites like Pirate Bay have used in their legal battles against the music and movie cartels.

However, Craigslist now vets the X-rated ads that appear on its websites so it has already accepted a certain level of responsibility for their content and is doing everything in its power to prevent exploitation. µ

Good.

Erotic under Services should never have been created. Services mean that the labor oe acts must be paid for so Exotic services are advertising prostitution..... nothing to think about. It is illegal and repulsive when one thinks that anyone, of any age, can post, read or reply.

The Casual Encounters should be enough for free thinking adults.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
