SEARCH IS NOT NEUTRAL say Google's accusers that are investigating the company for fiddling its search engine results.
Texas authorities have asked for details on three companies as part of their investigation - Foundem, a British price comparison site, Sourcetool and Mytriggers - all of which have close links with Microsoft. Foundem, which is part owned by Microsoft, has already been cited as a complainant in the European Union for a similar investigation, and Soucetool has had a private lawsuit on the matter dismissed in a US federal court.
Google is already facing antitrust probes by the EU, the US Department of Justice and the Italian government, and there are calls for an investigation in France. Google said that Mytriggers is also represented by Microsoft lawyers, and evidence has been discovered that its traffic loss was actually down to overheating servers.
"We're looking forward to working co-operatively with the Texas Attorney General's office. We work hard to explain our approach to search and how our ranking works, and we also listen carefully to people's concerns," said Don Harrison, Google's deputy general counsel in a blog post.
In the US, Consumer Watchdog has called for Google to be broken up to introduce more competition. For more analysis of Microsoft's ties to Google antitrust investigations, go here. µ
@ "too bad" & all other people who don't understand how this stuff works.
Running the infrastructure to produce your search, with thousands of results in seconds, costs billions of Dollars. As Techboy says, they even give you free email & apps.
Do you think they just did this out of the goodness of their hearts? They saw a demand and supplied it - good for them. While Microsoft was bullying you on every front, they did something that cost the end user nothing.
If I run a business and I want my company to show at the top of a search, I must pay. That is business - the same as billboard advertising, adverts on Primetime television, and the stickers on the side of a Formula One car. How do you think they pay for the free service they provide us? The exact same way your country provides you a "free" non-subscription based TV service - with advertising revenue.
Who do you think pays for the millions of sites that you browse on a regular basis - do you think those people have nothing better to do? Websites cost money to host & maintain - Google provides an income for those people. It might not be much, but it's better than a smack in the teeth.
Nobody denies that proft margins dominate business - has anyone noticed the initiatives Google is taking towards a "greener" world? Initiatives they were not compelled to take.
To hell with anyone who stomps on free enterprise - it'll be a sad day when innovation is crushed.
First off, Google needs to tell Mr. Greg Abbott (Andrew Cuomo Jr. except i like Andrew) to go fuck a duck, he's got no jurisdiction in this case, or over the internet period, so all he's doing is wasting tax payers money, It was determined a couple years back that individual states cannot set their own rules governing the internet, to avoid companies have 50 (potentially conflicting ) sets of rules to follow.
As for the merits of this investigation as well as all the others world wide, its bullshit thru and thru, everyone knows its bullshit, no matter how you dress it up.
Whats troubling about this is the fact that there really are abusive monopolies on the loose that are actively abusing the consumers of the world and getting away with it, one of them is behind this investigation, yet the powers that be in the world are doing little or nothing about it.
Um, you might want to look closer. The "albino" is only white because he's using a truckload of sunblock.
The actual darkness of Google is yet to be measured, but one thing I am certain of : Google lost its virginal whiteness a long while ago.
In the US, Consumer Watchdog has called for Google to be broken up to introduce more competition.
I can't believe they would say this for something that is FREE to consumers from Google!(And there already is plenty of competition just nobody wants to use it, so blame Google for that ?)
WAKE UP you idiots and Look at Microsoft, it charges big money to consumers to dominate the market! And it should be broken up, then introduce more competition!
If Google raped your wallet like Microsoft does ,would they then leave em alone like they do M$ ?
This is really hilarious. Microsoft is suing someone for dishonest business practices. MICROSOFT!!! This isn't just the pot calling the kettle black, this is the record breaking nano-engineered to intentionally not reflect light surface calling the albino standing in the sun on a bright white surface black.
I don't care if Google wins by doing a gangsta drive-by of Microsoft headquarters, I'm rooting for Google.
"Lets get serious"
Are you serious? I mean Really?
Put aside the wild exaggeration that searches from Google delver three pages of advertisers. The real issue here is that people like you use services like Google Search, Gmail, Facebook and others for free and then complain about Google's efforts to generate revenue.
How selfish and indulgent is that?!?!
Abusing the public trust??? Are you smoking crack?? Google is a FREE SERVICE that you can choose to use or not. No one is forcing you. Say, why dont YOU index the billion+ pages on the Internet then use your own search engine to find stuff.
Talk about being disconnected from reality. When you start paying for your search results then you can complain about them.
Speak for yourself. If you can't look down 2 inches on the screen for your search results, you shouldn't have the right to use the internet.
Googles services and near zero cost have brought tremendous value to me and everyone who uses them.
I, like everyone else, is sick of submitting a search and the first three pages are from advertisers that have little or nothing to do with my query.
Bust these Sh_ts for abusing the public trust they have been given before its too late.
