Yahoo gets into web telly
FORMER INTERNET STAR Yahoo has decided to get into the online TV business.
Yahoo has signed a deal with European telly maker Vestel to deliver TV, movies, video and other content in Europe.
The plan is that Vestel will deliver Yahoo's 'Connected TV' service to more than 40 countries in the region beginning in 2011.
Yahoo already works with other TV manufacturers including Sony, Samsung, LG and Vizio for Connected TV.
This brings web content to television from Yahoo properties such as Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Weather, Yahoo Video and Flickr, along with websites such as Amazon, Blockbuster, Ebay, Twitter and Facebook.
Rich Riley, SVP and managing director of Yahoo EMEA said Yahoo is transforming the television experience for millions of consumers around the world. Given that most people's television experience is sitting in front of it and changing channels it is hard to see how Yahoo will change much, other than providing another channel to watch.
He added that Vestel's consumer electronics products combined with Yahoo's industry-leading Connected TV platform will allow consumers to experience the Internet and television together in ways they never have before.
Of course it seems that the world plus dog is trying to shove telly content over the world wide web. The Apple friendly press has even accused Yahoo of nicking Steve Jobs' idea, although it also appears to have been used by Hulu and this outfit for a while now. µ

The way to succeed at Internet tv is to make it like real tv.
Minimal typing, central location to find stuff, tons of stuff available for free if you're willing to watch commercials.
We need a site that works the way Walmart did(I mean from the perspective of the owner), we need a site that aggregates content and is easy to use, it wouldn't transmit the video, just help get you hooked up to your stream. All it's money would be made while you're actually searching for stuff to watch.
Hell, maybe it already exists and I just don't know where to go. We've got various incarnations of this idea, but I don't think there's anything that covers everything. Bookmarked in case I'm wrong.
