Opera ends up on Mediatek's platform

BROWSER OUTFIT Opera's push into mobile web browsing appears to be paying off.

In a statement, Opera said that its Opera Mobile 10 browser is now available on Mediatek's platform.

Mediatek's chips for 2.75G and 3G feature phones will be shipped with Opera Mobile 10 on them.

Opera Mobile 10 users should be able to surf efficiently around the Internet even when connected to a slow, congested network.

It seems that Mediatek likes the part of the Opera browser that uses compression technology to enable faster loading of webpages.

Steven Yuan, GM of the wireless communication business unit at MediaTek said that while Internet browsing has been on smartphones for yonks it is time that appeared on normal phones.

The browser should run directly on Mediatek's platform, taking advantage of the hardware in the handsets for the download and display of webpages. µ
