La Cie launches a dinky flash drive

What will they think of next?

HARD DRIVE AND GADGET OUTFIT La Cie has built a really tiny USB flash drive that it calls the Moskeyto.

La Cie has come up with several marketing angles to flog its range of flash drives to punters. We've had flash drives that are "truck resistant" and flash drives that are "waterproof". Now we get a flash drive that is so small it is being compared to a mosquito.

Okay, it's nowhere near that small. But it is only 22mm long and weighs only 10g so it does have a fair claim to be the world's smallest USB flash stick. If you can ever reclaim it from the back of the sofa once you've bought it, La Cie reckons it'll come in handy for traveling storage.

In fact, La Cie thinks it has solved the problem of possibly losing it. The Moskeyto is so diminutive that the company claims it sits flush against a USB port. That means it can be left in the USB port without damaging the connection or the drive itself. That'll also solve any potential problems of never being able to find the thing once you've bought one. It might also mean you'll never be able to pull it out again once it's in there.

The Moskeyto has 16GB capacity and La Cie has arranged for another 4GB of online storage from Wuala, apparently as a free backup service for critical data.

The MosKeyto is out now if you can squint hard enough to find it, priced at £19.99. µ

@W.-

Yes. I bought a slightly more expensive but similarly-styled model in person while abroad in HK and have had no problems. This was the only weblink that I could find to illustrate the likeness in style. Sorry for the confusion.

@octagonalman

Did you read the reviews on that last link you gave? The thing breaks down in less than a week for most users, so basically that's not a real product at all, you might dub it a one-use throw away item if anything, but that's not comparable to a normal flashdrive.

Perhaps XEX had meant to refer to something a bit more like this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25557

.

@XEX You've missed the point, the point is that it's low profile so you can leave it in and it won't bend or break your port when you move your laptop around.

Overpriced

I do not see a need to pay premium for things that can be obtained for much less.

Take this one:

Insert your favorite micro sd card and voila! you have micro flash drive for far less.

leave it in usb?

IIRC, they said that USB flash drives have poor power supplies, so that you should keep it plugged in only as long as it takes to copy stuff. otherwise it will break in time.

anyway, the whole point of usb flash is portability, obv.
