Nokia shuts down Ovi backup service

Regrets the inconvenience
Thu Sep 02 2010, 11:17

FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has decided to pull the plug on its Ovi Files Connector service.

According to its website Nokia will shut down the service on 1 October, and users should uninstall the Ovi Files Connector application on their PCs. This is just a simple uninstall and you will not lose anything really.

Ovi Files Connector maintained an 'online mirror' of files saved on your Windows PC or Mac, so your original files will remain intact.

It will still be possible to share content between your phone and PC using another Nokia product. This is confusingly called Nokia Ovi Suite. We guess the other one should be called Nokia Ovi Sour.

However Nokia warns that the Ovi Suite requires a wired connection between a PC and your mobile device so it is not quite as good as the sour version.

A Nokia spokesman said the company regrets the inconvenience, which is exactly what British Rail says when you have to walk home because it can't be arsed to run a late train service. µ

British Rail does not exist anymore

British Rail does not exist anymore. Its replacement Network Rail does not run trains either, they are run by private franchises like Virgin and members of Association of Train Operating Companies. According to the Railway Passenger Charter you can get compensation and even free taxi home if your booked service is cancelled or delayed beyong the connection time. Please do not blame the railway, instead exercise your rights as a passenger. You will be surprised what you can expect in return as a passenger if you are vocal about your train passenger rights.

Shane would be delighted...

It's the Inq Shane. It's a nice sarcastic twist on tech news. I seriously don't think many people 'get it' any more.

If people bought anything based on The Inq, apple and nVidia would be bust for starters.

I don't think Nokia has to worry about this article.

Shane from Nokia

Hi, I work for Nokia. Yes, we have ramped down Ovi Files. But the long term benefits will be better for consumers because we are focusing on creating better experiences in maps, music, apps, messaging, email, IM and social networks.

For example, Ovi Maps is a cornerstone of our strategy to provide contextual services to the more than 17 million people who already use it. It's a free, constantly updated navigation service that has the most global footprint of any of our competitors.

In addition, we currently host a digital music service that is #1 in 6 markets and an apps store that gets 1.7 million downloads daily. Nearly 14 million people in emerging markets have accessed the Internet for the first time using Ovi Mail and we will enable millions more our browser that is to come.

So we've got momentum in services...we're not going away...and I'd be delighted to talk with you more about it when you have a moment.
