Motorola updates Milestone with Android 2.2

PHONE MAKER Motorola has finally joined the Android 'Froyo' party with the launch of its latest Milestone handset, which runs Android 2.2.

The handset maker also took the wraps off a rugged mobile phone that it dubbed the Motorola Defy.

The Milestone 2 features some key updates to its predecessor, including the latest version of the Android OS, Flash 10.1 and an enhancement to the firm's Motoblur interface that syncs up information from sites and email accounts.

"The Milestone 2 has been updated with a raft of new features based on feedback we've received on the original device," said Tom Satchwell, European marketing director at Motorola.

A 720p HD video capture capability has also added alongside the 5MP camera.

The phone has a 1Ghz processor as well as 8GB of internal storage, with an option for up to 32GB to be added on a MicroSD card. Battery life is said to be extensive, but no specific information was given.

No information was given on pricing. Motorola said this will be dependant on ongoing discussions with network operators, but expects it to go on sale in the fourth quarter.

The second device, the Motorola Defy, is designed to offer "life-proof" protection against everyday wear and tear, including water, scratching and dust, with resistance to the International Protection IP67 standard built in to the device.

"Our aim was to make a product that if you are out and about with, out running or in a busy work environment, it won't cause you any problems. It's all about giving the phone enough protection so you don't need to worry about damage," said Satchwell. The device has some similarities to the Milestone 2, including a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, and has Adobe Flash Lite built in to the browser as well as the enhanced version of Motoblur, however it only runs Android 2.1.

Pricing information is not available, with Motorola again saying it will depend on network operators' subsidies. The devices will be available in the fourth quarter.

These new handsets push Motorola's output of Android devices to 17, following hot on the heels of the Flipout announced in June. µ
