SOCIAL NEWS WEBSITE Reddit has defied its owner Condé Nast about running adverts for a pro-marijuana legalisation campaign in California.
Breadheads at Condé Nast decided against selling space for the ads. However they forgot to tell Reddit that the advertisements should not be run at all.
So Reddit decided to run the ads for the "Just say Now" campaign for free instead, according to Wired.
The "Just Say Now" ads support passage of California's Proposition 19 in November's general election, which would largely legalize the use of marijuana.
Condé Nast executives ruled against running the ads on the user-driven Reddit. Condé Nast also owns Wired magazine and Wired.com as well as the online and print publications the New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Vogue.
Reddit said Condé Nast declined to run the ads from the "Just Say Now" group because it said the company "does not want to financially benefit from this issue".
But apparent Reddit's users revolted at the news and the outfit's employees noticed that its owner hadn't actually prohibited running the ads, but just said it didn't want to take money for doing so.
After getting that official reason for the rejection, Reddit's administrators decided to run the ads for free.
Reddit has a loyal user group but can't bring in advertising. Recently the website asked users to sign up for "Gold" memberships so the outfit could hire another engineer.
Maybe now it should rename those as "Acapulco Gold" memberships. µ
I'm a libertarian and a fundamentalist on drugs: don't at all care if you burn your mind out or kill yourself with them, but expect zero sympathy from me for your attempts to escape reality.
This little bit of defiance is good, though. -- Not that I read Reddit or Wired.
Condé Nast is a corporation that I despise sheerly by accident, just keep running across nasty little items about its expanding empire (they bought ArseTechnica, for instance). Their magazine of that title is elitist at best. The ones I glanced through some years back featured luxury goods, $100K trips to climb Everest, and detailed instructions on busywork for your maid. Just despicable.
