ALTERNATIVE SEARCH ENGINE Bing has managed to fare rather well against Google and Yahoo with figures showing Microsoft's search engine amassing impressive market share gains.
Our well-heeled colleagues over at Nielsen reported that Bing's US market share grew to 13.6 per cent as of July 2010. While that figure doesn't sound all that impressive, especially next to Google's 64.2 per cent, it does represent a 51 per cent increase for Microsoft's search engine over the previous year. In comparison, Google's share fell by one per cent over the same 12 month period.
Nielsen's figures put Bing in third place just behind Yahoo, though as of yesterday Yahoo's US search operations were being powered by Bing, meaning it is almost certainly became Google's chief rival. Microsoft will also take solace from the fact that when the number of searches was taken into account its growth outpaced all its rivals, recording a 28 per cent increase.
Microsoft finally decided to take web search seriously when it launched Bing. Following an impressive and sustained marketing blitz, it seems the search engine hasn't become the embarrassment that many had predicted it would be.
Given the impressive growth of Bing, it will be interesting to see how much Microsoft will gain from taking over Yahoo's search operations. The problem for the outfit is that achieving 50 per cent growth is relatively easy when your market share is low, so the big question is whether Bing can continue to grow and start to really challenge Google.
For now, Microsoft can be pleased after posting an impressive showing with Bing, something it rarely manages with its other products. µ

It's exactly the case. Can it keep the growth?
BTW I think competition is always good but not when there's something called MS. All of these big companies are collecting information about us and MS is at top of the line with things like windows (of course), windows mobile, xbox, zune, bing, hotmail, live and so on. A complete collection of spying assets! Others are not far behind.
Wow first article I have read in this site where Microsoft wasn't called "the Vole." What happenned???! ;) All said great article. :).
I'm not surprised by the growth of Bing, though I detest its name and is the source of much laughter in the IT department I work in.
Just the other day I was searching (google) for something particular and I had spent some time fine tuning my search criteria and still couldn't get what I wanted. So I pasted these search criteria into Bing and I was shocked to see exactly what I was looking for come up on the top spot.
I am now experimenting using Bing as my primary search engine. So far I have found that using both google and bing is the best way to go. Sometimes one works better than the other, which is what you would expect.
So don't write off Bing just yet. The trick is to not place all your search eggs in one web basket.
I see, when Microsoft is involved you claim you won't be adding to their belligerence, never mind the fact that what Google has been doing lately has been much worse than Microsoft. Lemme guess you are either a Linux dweeb or a Macalot.
Imagine my DISGUST when I, in was trying to give a smaller competitor some business, by using Yahoo's search facilities, found out Yahoo recently deferred all their searches to Microsoft's Bing thing. So long Yahoo. Good riddance Microsoft. Google's results for me was better. But I'll be hanged if I'm adding to Microsoft's belligerence.
When Microsoft Captured Yahoo Search, Great thangee' Happened. Mic took 12% of Yahoo Revenue. that expands to 18% over 10 year Rental. Remember, Yahoo would get 100% of Ad Revenues, except Microsoft bit Yahoo on leg for little Blood.

information... not so much.
"...when the number of searches was taken into account its growth outpaced all its rivals..."
Is that because you can't get what you need on the first search with Bing, so end users are wasting their time re-running searches to get the desired results?
