AMD reveals its next generation GPU codenames in a Catalyst update
GRAPHICS CHIP DESIGNER AMD has unwittingly revealed the codenames of its upcoming GPU chips by updating its software drivers.
The firm released the latest version of its Catalyst driver suite and issued the usual performance claims along with the news that there is anti-aliasing support in Starcraft II. There's also OpenGL ES 2 support if that's your thing but the most interesting aspect of this release was the confirmation that the company is working on a number of 'Southern Island' parts.
The guys at VR Zone managed to extract the codenames for Cayman, Antilles, Blackcomb, Bartis, Whistler, Onega, Turks, Seymour, Caicos and Caspian parts. Though these are just codenames, their suffixes give pointers to which products the chips will end up in.
AMD has for some time been promoting its upcoming GPU parts though at this point little detail has been made public. These codenames do show a surprisingly large number of parts penciled in for release, although they provide no interesting details such as core counts or clock speeds.
As for the drivers themselves, the feedback has been mixed. On AMD's forums, some users are seeing performance improvements in games while others are still seeing disappointing frame rates.
If you fancy taking AMD's latest graphics software drivers out for a spin, the drivers are out for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 in both 32 and 64-bit versions. µ

names like Pro & GL are probably Fire Series. Xt Desktop. notice bart is in middle. so who really knows about 6800 series.Some carribean islands & some canadian mountains or towns.

Tech news sites have been using this for years now for graphics hardware from all manufacturers, so I'm sure AMD is completely aware that as soon as they put that in it would be on those sites.
As for 'extracted', that is simply in plain english in .inf files isn't it? And only requires notepad to find.
And people have been opening those files for a long time to fix bugs themselves or to get drivers to run on notebooks that try to force people to use custom manufacturer drivers
It's almost as secret as a press announcement.
Southern island should be 6700 Series & lower, While Bartis is 6800 series single or dual gpu at Top,Top. Remember, Bart,errrr. Barter, something to do with old parts.
Flea Market 'Puters. Barton Core K7, before Hammer Time. Lets see, for 6200 card I could let this unit go for....
