BIG IRON COMPUTER MAKER IBM unveiled a nearly no-power "Winkle" mode in its Power7 chips at the Hot Chips conference in the US.
IBM has been building its Power7 chips with three sleep modes. These are activated depending on the amount of load on the processor. But "Winkle" mode was designed to put the chip into a deep sleep, hence the Rip Van Winkle reference.
This deep sleep mode for Power7 chips draws up to 85 per cent less power when the processor has no workload and is sitting idle.
Everyone takes a while to wake up after a deep sleep and IBM's Power7 Winkle mode is no different. It takes an extra 10 to 20 milliseconds to kick back into action. By contrast, the Power7 chip wakes up from its other sleep modes in 2 milliseconds so that's a big difference.
IBM didn't say exactly when Power7 chips with Winkle mode will be shipping, but we guess they will be available soon. µ
"IBM didn't say exactly when Power7 chips with Winkle mode will be shipping, but we guess they will be available soon."
The answer is elementary, my dear Watson...er,umm...my dear Dalziel. Why, when they wake up, of course!
