Google sells out of Nexus One smartphones

Too many cooks spoil the broth

JUST AS ARTISTS are appreciated after they're dead, it seems Google can't stock enough Nexus One smartphones since the company announced that it would stop selling them.

Last month the firm announced that it would stop flogging the Android smartphones to customers through its website. Rather, the devices would only be sold to developers who could use the Nexus One as a sort of 'reference' Android smartphone.

What with 70,000 or so Android applications, it's not surprising that there are a fair few developers out there, and now Google says that it cannot meet Nexus One demand among developers. This contrasts sharply with the relatively lacklustre sales it racked up during its brief seven month life, which led many to question Google's direct sales strategy.

The firm said that it "blew through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time" and that the devices are on back order with HTC. Google hinted that a shortage of AMOLED screens might affect delivery times but tried to calm developer fears by saying that it is working hard to restock its shelves.

The Internet search behemoth and first-time smartphone seller had described the Nexus One as a "nice phone", and we tend to agree. µ

Not surprised

Apparently people woke up and realized that the Nexus is the only Android phone that's running "Vanilla Android", aka the original version of Android by Google .
All the others are running "custom" versions, possibly with proprietary software inside or other third party modifications. Which means that you can't just fetch the source from the android source archive and expect it to work on your phone.
So, when it comes to getting the next version, it's all up to the manufacturer (and it's eagerness to sell new devices, I am looking at you HTC with the Hero) or to weekend hackers like Cyanogen.

Some months ago, when Google announced they were killing the Nexus, it always seemed a bit odd to me. Android 2.2 had just been rolled out, and the Nexus was the only freaking phone that run 2.2! What??
