Cloud hopes for silver lining
Wed Aug 18 2010, 09:05

SOFTWARE KING OF THE KNOWN WORLD Microsoft has released a new beta version of the software giant's free Windows software accessories pack, Windows Live Essentials.

The Vole seems to want everyone to know what date the final version will hit the shops because it has nailed the name 2011 to the title.

The cloud based apps included Live Mail, Writer, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Family Safety, Bing Toolbar IE plug-in and the instant messenger client Messenger.

The first beta was available to be played with a couple of months ago but this new beta incorporates new features such as Facebook Chat integration in the Messenger chat client, Flickr export in Movie Maker and geo-location support in Bing Maps.

Microsoft tells us that this beta update has lots of performance improvements too. It has sped up the the time it takes to start each program or render each webpage. Messenger is quicker now for signing in and refreshing contacts and social feeds, and animation is faster too.

There is a more more efficient video chat thanks to the fact that Messenger video chat uses 30 per cent fewer CPU resources by offloading work to the GPU. Photo Gallery has better facial recognition and is also quicker. Movie maker can handle higher resolution movies to SkyDrive and has a better bit-rate content.

Writer has a better spell chucker and works better with Vole Office. Mail automatically handles Gmail's spam and trash folders properly. And there is faster web filtering. The Vole claims to have fixed over 75 per cent of reported crashes from the first beta. µ

Failed to Install

I tired to install this 3 times last night on VISTA and got 3 different error messages. As usual the WINDOWS HELP was no help at all.

Arrrrr

Another piece of memory hogging, it wont see my camera or actually make a proper video call to (at the time) my brother in Austrailia piece of shite program.

Heck WML uses 100mb+ when it's open fair enough if you have 4GB of RAM (like me) thats pocket change as it lets it go after use but for people with small notebooks etc even when your just chatting with text 100+mb it stupid.

It failed to even make a connection when me and brother were trying to make a cideo call to each other, I could see myself but not him, he could see me but himself ????. Skype on the other hand perfect worked like a charm I wonder why???

Useless

And despite all these new features I'll be sticking to the current version of Messenger for as long as possible. I had the last beta on my system for all of 5 mins before I ditched it. I despise social not-working and if I'm gonna be bombarded by fakebook, twithead and lamespace crap then it's a massive thumbs down from me, if I want to talk to people on those sites then I'll go to the damn site. Don't fix what isn't broke

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
