Nokia sets a date for N8

Leaves Brits out in the cold
Tue Aug 17 2010, 12:20

MISUNDERSTOOD PHONE MAKER Nokia has finally slapped a shipping date of sorts on its range topping N8 smartphone.

The Finnish phone outfit, which has suffered some financial and market share losses, has been talking up the N8 for some time now, though it wouldn't be drawn out as to when the device will actually tip up. Now it seems the phone maker has pencilled in an end of September shipping date for the device.

Nokia is taking pre-orders for the phone, though as usual us Brits are the last in line. While punters in the US, France, Germany and Poland can get their orders in, the firm's UK website has a rather useless 'signup to be notified' sign. Well, consider this your notification that the release of the latest in the long line of N-series devices that have promised so much but yet deliver disappointment is just round the corner.

Prices in Europe range from €460 and €480 Euros while over in the United States it's a nice round $550. Going by previous Nokia N-series handsets, it's more than likely mobile operators will heavily subsidise the phone to try and lure punters away from Iphones.

Both T-Mobile and Vodafone have already said that they will be offering the N8, though neither has posted pricing or availability dates. It has also been rumoured that the device will tip up on 02, though the firm is yet to confirm this.

Nokia decided, in all its foresight, to stick with a Symbian OS on the N8, which will resul in users getting an out-dated experience. A fortnight ago the firm tried to promote some of the features on the N8, mentioning multi-touch, augmented reality and HDMI video output.

If all that has whet your appetite, sit tight, it's not long now before Nokia's latest brick will land. µ

Expected

I agrre with some things in the by Steve I had a Nokia 5800 XM phone loved it until after 8 months it died. Vodafone and there shite returns warrenty policy sent it off came back lasted a day before the original fault happend.

Sent that off came back lasted 2 months before original fault happened again bare in mind same phone as IMEI number matched box etc. Finally 3rd try got a new one but lost that in a taxi after a night out. But regarding updates he is right we have to wait ages for the carrier to approve it and then the updates are shite, V40 made it worse on my 1st phone after 2nd repair.

Would love to have a 5800 again but with V30 firmware.

No surprise...

This is no surprise. We have to wait for firmware updates too.
If you buy a Nokia from a carrier you might as well give up, you'll be lucky to ever get an update.
Even if you go to the trouble and expense of buying a non-network locked Nokia in the UK you still do not end up with a Generic Euro phone, you get what they call a UK country variant. Which has some faceless/nameless entity controlling and delaying all firmware releases in the name of network compatibility.
Which is kind of odd as you see countless Europeans getting off planes and boats with their Nokia's happily working on the UK network they roam to.
There was a campaign on the Nokia forums for some equality, and the N97 V2.0 firmware actually arrived for UK CV phones within a few days of the Euro release (a big improvement from before). Unfortunately things went back to normal service after that.

Psychomania, who pushed the campaign and who Nokia celebrated as their discussion forum guru after 20,000 posts, has given up. After a long line of Nokia phones now uses an HTC Desire as his main phone!
Still Nokia do not get the hint...
