Mozilla releases Firefox 4 beta 3

Browser gets multi-touch
Thu Aug 12 2010, 12:09

MOZILLA HAS RELEASED Firefox 4 beta 3, which is the first version of the open source web browser to support multi-touch.

Multi-touch only works on the Windows 7 version of the beta 3 release, however. The Mozzarella Foundation's press release said that multi-touch features in Firebadger 4 mean that people can "interact with web content with their hands naturally".

We are not sure about this. After all using Windows 7 might not be natural and pressing the screen with greasy paws does not seem like a good way to work with the world wide web. But maybe we are just getting old.

"Developers can use multi-touch capabilities to leverage touch-enabled devices and provide people with an intuitive and fun browsing experience," Mozilla said.

Other features include improved Javascript support that should help to produce smooth and streamlined graphics for web applications.

One of the more amusing things that the Mozzarella Foundation wants is a few more women to test it out. Apparently 96 per cent of Firefox beta testers are blokes.

The beta can be downloaded here . It should be released to the great unwashed in November. µ

Plugin compatibility

You can disable compatability checking by going to about:config in firefox and creating a boolean value called extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0b with a value set to false. Works for with Ad Block Plus, IETab2, and Googlapeadia.
