Adobe gives Mac OS X H.264 GPU decoding

Linux is still out of the H.264 picture
Wed Aug 11 2010, 11:37

MACOLYTES are getting hardware accelerated video decoding in the latest installment of Flash.

A short time ago Adobe gave Windows users hardware accelerated H.264 content in its release of Flash 10.1. Now Apple's OS X is next in line for the same treatment while Linux users will have to wait longer.

Adobe product managers Thibault Imbertn and Didier Brun blogged earlier that they didn't normally do video updates in security releases. However, they couldn't help themselves because it was such a "cool feature".

"We just pushed a few minutes ago a new version of the Flash Player 10.1.82.76 containing a nice feature that was in beta until now called 'Gala'. Yes, H.264 GPU decoding in Mac OSX is now officially enabled in the Flash Player."

The team reckons Mac OS X users will be able to tell the difference on the Mac in terms of CPU usage. Of course, that assumes anyone using a Mac would know what a benchmarking tool to test CPU usage is. Actually, it also assumes that anyone using a Mac even knows what a CPU is.

Adobe already pushed the beta version out on Macs to provide smoother HD playback using graphics acceleration. Back in April a Flash Player engineer blogged about features in the beta version. µ

Well that's it then. Case proven. A sample of what, a dozen people maximum, proves that the majority of PC users are IT literate and MAC owners are hopeless.

I wouldn't try pushing your theory to help desk operators though, not if you don't want them to laugh in your face and taunt you for your naiveté.

Mac users?

You know, it's comments like that about Mac users that make me glad I'm using an adblocker on your site. Nothing like costing you bandwidth and not making you any revenue.

Macintards

There are several web hosting companies that specialize in offering Mac Mini's as web servers. These companies make a profit.

I do not think anything more need be said about the n00b-ness of Macintards.

Deanjo, you're pissing me off

Dude, think about it, just because Macs and Windows machines get all the advertising on the boob tube doesn't mean they're the only OSes out there. I'm a Mac hater, but I also hate Windows crap. And guess what, Linux doesn't require re-installs either(well, maybe 1/10th as often, maybe less).

Get a clue, Linux is awesome, it just has about 1/100th the advertising revenue.

Woot!

The whiners on this thread have no sense of humor. Must be Mac users :-)

I have to laugh at most of these Mac hater comments. Having worked with thousands of uses over the years on both Mac and Windows users there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the average Mac user has a higher level of technical expertise then the average Window user. Windows users love to say "time to re-install" while a OS X / *nix install lasts for years without reinstallation and can be easily fixed if an issue arrives without resorting to re-installation of the OS.

Truth can hurt

Though in all honesty not all Mac users are ignorant as described however, the majority is as the article entails. As the IT POC for my family all the Window based users have a good basic knowledge of the parts, etc. while the very few Mac users are somewhat lost when discussing or asked to describe such things.

PC Users = NOOBs too

Contrary to the beliefs here most computer users (PC or MAC) don't understand anything but a superficial amount about the machines they are using. Trying to get them to keep track with patches and updates is a problem in it's own right.

It's equally easy, if a little more obvious, to check CPU, memory, disk and network usage on a Mac. Just take a look in the Utilities folder some time and see. More likely to be obvious is the lack of noise from the system fans that won't need to spool up when playing video any more.

MAC users = noobs?

Sigh i work in a school where the
Art Teachers went to the head and said "We needs macs! they have video editing and Photoshop". The head being a Ipod and IPhone Lover thought this was a great idea. The ICT staff and ICT technicians, soon SHOT that idea down quick!

Most mac users like Pc users are noobs they dont know or care how they work.

The author is quite right to diss Aplle the hardware is way overpriced its standard PC stuff for gods sake. Get a grip Apple fanbois.

@above

Ignore that, I get the point. Mac's are for simpletons. Not the kind of people normally interested in this kind of update.

Made me chuckle... Keep it up...

Ridiculous attack and bias

I know you're biased as hell when it comes to Apple stories, but was there really such a need for the attacks on users knowledge levels when it comes to benchmarking?

Are you seriously suggesting that a lower proportion of Mac users, in comparison to Windows users (including all those middle-aged women in admin offices), know what a CPU is?

It wasn't good journalism, it was childish, and it was unneeded.
