SIX MILLION malware infected systems have been found by the insecurity experts at McAfee over the last quarter, while spam volumes have leveled out.
McAfee's quarterly Threat Report said malware rocketed due to cybercriminals tapping into World Cup scamming, resurrected botnets and USB vulnerabilities.
The report claims that malware hit its highest recorded levels while spam grew by only 2.5 per cent since the first quarter of 2010.
Portable storage devices were most at risk, with dodgy anti-virus software coming in joint second with malware targeting social notworking applications. Apparently, there are 55,000 new types of malware that come out every day, with the top threats being Autorun malware and Trojans.
Spam went up during the World Cup with spammers using different hooks based on dodgy football-related paraphernalia to snag Internet searches. Delivery status notifications were big in the US, probably bigger than the actual football, sorry, soccer matches. Argentina had 16 different spam topics while Italians had just six.
"Our latest threat report depicts that malware has been on a steady incline in the first half of 2010," said Mike Gallagher, SVP and CTO of global threat intelligence for McAfee.
"It's also obvious that cybercriminals are becoming more in tune with what the general public is passionate about from a technology perspective and using it to lure unsuspecting victims. These findings indicate that not only should cybercrime education be more widespread, but that security organizations should move from a reactive to a predictive security strategy." µ
with it's totally awesome sandboxing. See, if you install a game, you don't want it looking at your credit card numbers, so all the games go into the games user and only have access to each other. Of course, yes, Linux kinda sucks with games. But when you buy Windows 7, you realize the only thing it's worthwhile for is games, so it's 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other when you install it as a virtual machine on your computer so you can play games.
And Linux is free, so it's the same amount of money with more security when you buy the extra Windows 7 DVD(CD?)
I agree!
It is time to get rid of windows.
Last day another kde was released and look what it offered:
1)You have different workspaces as in gnome (in windows this is science fiction...) and you can have different wallpapers AND widgets in each workspace!(this can't be done in gnome...)----mind that wallpapers can be the whole planet rotating!
2)Tabbed and tabbing windows. This is another thing that gnome can't do. You can group different applications in one windows with the method of tabs! So convenient!
3)Activities. They give another dimension to the workspaces.
Right now I have 4 different workspaces and five different activities. Aka 20 different wallpapers (4 of them various implementations of the earth!) and 40 different widgets running at the same time!
And yes all these does not consume my computer resources as much as I anticipated.
All in all, kde is so much ahead of the competition and it continues evolving rapidly.
And while I praise kde, I have to admit that even gnome is so much better than windows.
WAKE UP WINDOWS USERS!
You pay for something that is worse, you are not allowed to share, to explore to OWN!
TAKE BACK YOU PC!
Microsoft have quite a dominating part of the market. If a Malware company is trying to make money who will the target? The MacOS that a small majority of users are using or Windows?
Do the math... Windows = more people = more money... Only reason why Mac's OS "looks" more secure is because noone is targeting it. Take away the leading OS and you're left with Malware targeting an even less secure OS and making more money...
I say, nice work Malware companies for showing people what business is :D
Yeah, let's get rid of Windows so that another OS, say OSx can get infected more. That would really make sense. Especially since OSx is so much less secure than Windows 7 (Proven too!)
Not surprised that a company who depends on malware to make a living would also make such a claim.
I've been using computers since they required punch cards and have never suffered malware but then again I don't use McAfee or Symantec.
I consider anything made by either MacCrappee or sNorton to be malware or avirus enabler.
Any Windows machine that has either Mcaffee or Norton on is usually infected with most known variants of malware so they should definitely have knowledge of the issue.
Now if they could just stop making pretty gui screens and produce a product that works maybe malware infections would reduce.
Mcaffee was recently outed in a list of companies that work directly with the NSA, so I don't put much stock in any claim they make.
IMO, Mcaffee and the other A/V vendors are the ones behind most of the malware out there.
Oh, wait a sec. Seems to be about viruses running *on* Windows... Well, I don't see any difference except that you *pay* for Windows. Let's just get rid of Windows.
