Microsoft finally rolls out its Hotmail update

Usual story, late and missing features
Wed Aug 04 2010, 13:00

WEBMAIL PROVIDER Microsoft says it has finally managed to roll out its Hotmail update to all users.

The Vole's web-base email service, which used to run on FreeBSD servers, had been looking decidedly tacky compared to Google's Gmail. That is until Microsoft realised it was time to wave the decorator's brush over it to try to win back users.

The initial roll out started months ago, but the Vole, clearly aware of its limitations, decided to take things slowly. Now it is claiming that all users have been moved over, though some Chinese users have already claimed that not all features are available to them.

Users are also complaining of other bugs, but then again we are talking about Microsoft software here, so just be happy it doesn't disappear in a cloud of smoke. However Mike Schackwitz, the Vole who, some months ago, wrote that the roll out would "take a few weeks to finish," now says that the firm is listening to user feedback and making tweaks based on complaints.

The update was supposed to bring Exchange Active Sync support, but despite the delay that feature didn't quite make it, with Schackwitz saying, "We share in your desire to get Exchange Active Sync available for everyone, we'll have more news to share on this soon." Don't hold your breath, folks.

Microsoft is desperately trying to catch up with Gmail. Google's service has rightly taken all the plaudits since it appeared with an extensive and still growing feature list. Those who are already bound to Microsoft products such as Outlook might find that Hotmail's new features do help but for those running better email clients such as Mozilla's Thunderbird, there's little to get excited about. µ

@hotmail.com

Can we get the dropdown back from a few crap updates ago so we don't have to type "@hotmail.com" every time we login?

Anyway, I came here to find out when this rollout took effect because Hotmail seems to have deleted old emails without informing me, and some automatic notices recently stopped coming in.

Love it!

Don't know what all these complains are all about. But I absolutely love it, never had any pronlems with hotmail previously and this upgrades makes email managing even better for me when I am not using my home pc outlook. I have email at yahoo, gmail, hotmail but always prefer hotmail simply because its straigh forward feature filled and fits and gives all the extra Windows Live goodies. Just my 2c

made the switch

I used to use Hotmail as my main email account years ago (before Gmail's arrival) but the sheer amount of spam I was receiving made me jump ship. I switched over to Gmail and haven't had any problems.

However! I heard about this new Hotmail makeover and decided to check it out... and was delighted to find that its very very good. In fact, better than Gmail because you have the option of threads, folders, OR BOTH (something Gmail doesn't offer). Also, spam is no longer an issue as they've nailed down the filters so you never see crap in the inbox. The "sweep" feature is cool. Drag-drop capability. Message preview on the right side of the screen. I stumble upon new features all the time that I never knew it could do. The new Hotmail is just plain better than Gmail. Google is going to have to step it up. I officially switched back to Hotmail as my primary account.

50 email limit on WIndows Mobile, try it yourself.

When are we going to be able to see more than 50 emails on Windows Mobile Phones?

I have a HTC smartphone but it uses Windows Mobile 6.1, and as such the hotmail/outlook/windowslivemail mess means it only shows the newest 50 emails.

What a POS.

Does anyone have a fix for this? Why isn't Microsoft fixing this?

generally good giving trademark/classic/traditional depth

small font size is good, giving hotmail's trademark/classic depth. another feature of keeping mouse hover over name pops a menu to filter view showing mails from that sender. though could be achieved with search its a good addition. also if u click unread it will remain saved no matter u log-out. a good corporate MSOutlook style feature to keep eye on unread and save bandwidth on mobile instead of keep finding unread. live messenger is now embeded, i am getting its pass through my corporate MSN-Messenegr blocks. might be my IT-Security head guy has not got his hotmail upgraded yet. the font size as comlained is also good not granny like 12-font as used in gmail. small font gives depth. bad things are dragging facebook inside which is already now a sinking ship like its ancestors orkut, mirc. or like MS is going too lovey lovey kissy kissy towards Apple, has it lost trust/pride in its might !?! or is it because both's govt are alie in antiterror. Lastly email in general is loosing its role as comunication medium.

Change your settings

If you want the inbox after logging in just change the options. Her is how you change the settings:
On the right select options - more options... - Customize your mail - Windows Live Home Setting than change to "Show me my inbox when I sign in". Problem solved.

Looks like a DOS screen

This has got to be the all time worst update in history. I kept thinking that there was something wrong with my screen. It is the ugliest, most distracting interface I have ever used. It really boggles my mind how anyone thought this was a good idea. I now dread having to check for hotmail messages.

Extra...crap.

Oh yes its 'improved'.

How exactly though, does adding in an extra screen and a small text button to take you to your mailbox help matters?

I just want my email. I dont want any other crap getting in the way.

Thats why I dont use hotmail as my primary.
