IT HAS BEEN EXPECTED, but Samsung could get its Android tablet out sooner than thought.
Samsung has confirmed that it will release a 7-inch touchscreen tablet running Google's Android OS by the end of the third quarter.
Other reports suggest that the tablet will have its official announcement on August 11 due to people receiving special invitations for that date, and the announcement is unlikely to be a smartphone since Samsung has just released the Galaxy S.
Until then other information about the 'Galaxy Tablet' is just guesswork, but it has been suggested that it will have a Super AMOLED screen, a feature that Samsung has been counting on to differentiate its devices from those of its rivals.
Other possible specifications could be a 1.2GHz processor, a 3.2 megapixel camera or two and 16GB of internal storage using a microSDHC slot.
Other companies like LG Electronics, Toshiba and Lenovo have all announced plans for Android tablets, but this could be the first rival to the Ipad built by a real competitor. The Dell Streak hasn't exactly set the world alight, or even made much of dent in Ipad sales.
In fact, sales of the Ipad are going so well that Apple is having difficulty in keeping up with demand. µ
...will be when they're cheap enough to not cry if you drop one in the tub.
[And not cry about having to lay out $20-$40 on a keyboard just to have a keyboard, but all you nerds bemoaning them now thought the folding models were oh-so-cool in the even more awkward Palm Pilot days.]
It's about having cheap readers (and viewers, given even the cheapest CPU and SD controller can push video now), game pads and auxiliary displays. The only reason they didn't take off in the '90s was that the displays still cost into the stratosphere and made a simple 'assistant' cost as much as a we're-gonna-pretend-it's-a-supercomputer 'workstation.'
[...and Palm still had a go at it then, but the same compromises that kept Palms affordable - tiny screens, wacky input method, fiddly RS-232 docks - made it annoying to do much more with them than the boring organizer tasks they were 'designed' for.]
LOL@pointless.
They're the future of computing, whether you like them or not. Obviously they're still in their infancy, but the tablet of 2015 will be an entirely different beast altogether, incorporating 3-d interfaces, cutting edge games and all the other stuff we take for granted today.
As to the size, I think 7 inches is the sweet spot for tablets (for the year 2010.)
You may find them pointless but there are millions of people finding a good use for them and willing to shell out £300 for the priviliege.
aybe they arent gadget freaks like you and me.
Howeve3r for this to work samsung need to up the spec to 9" minimum or it will fail IMHO
an attached keyboard and a clamshell case.
I still find tablets incredibly pointless, the Ipad was pointless and I think these will be as well, the only good thing is they will most likely take Apple's Ipad marketshare and that's always a plus :P
