MAKERS OF ITHINGS Apple has officially had its Iphone 4 jailbroken to the delight of fanbois everywhere.
Until now only videos were available showing that jailbroken and unlocked Iphone 4s were out there. With the release of Jailbreakme, the Iphone 4 and all other Iphone OS devices can be jailbroken easily.
Jailbreaking allows users to install applications from sources other than Apple's App Store. This means that applications that fail to receive Apple CEO Steve Jobs' blessing can be acquired, typically by using a repository such as Cydia.
Last week, the Library of Congress approved jailbreaking mobile phones, meaning Jobs' Mob cannot legally force users to stay within its walled garden. Though such a move could in theory hurt Apple's revenues, the percentage of Iphones and Ipads that are jailbroken is thought to be low. Nevertheless, the ruling coupled with the availability of easy to use software could slowly change all that as users get fed up with Steve Jobs dictating what they can and cannot do.
Jailbreakme is the latest release from the Iphone Dev Team. While this update doesn't incorporate a software carrier unlock as many had been hoping for, it shouldn't be long before that turns up. Until then, users can gain some semblance of freedom by pointing their Iphones, Ipads or Ipod Touches towards the Jailbreakme website.
We think it's the first software fix for the Iphone 4 that actually works. µ

Slowly, but surely, companies are going to realize (by force of law if necessary, but by force of market above all) that a walled garden is not a place where you lock customers in, but a place where you entice customers to come freely.
If your walled garden is enforced, it will be shunned.
Only if your walled garden is demonstrably desirable, and brings real value to the customer, will he voluntarily give away whatever measure of liberty is required to benefit from the garden's services.
Of course, enticing and enchanting are a lot more work than building a gated corral and herding the cows in.
I never had a desire to Jailbreak or even to look into Jailbreaking until Apples recent heavy handed actions. Apple's built-in wifi scanner is pretty poor. Therefore for the last few years I have been using wifi scanners I downloaded from the app store. However with IOS 4 they stopped working and Apple for questionable reasons removed these apps from the app store.
Now I am left without this functionality. Apple has basically removed functionality that allowed me to use my device everywhere with ease. As soon as I see this kind of app in the Cydia library I will be Jailbreaking to return this functionality.
This is a perfect example how Apple has forced a user into Jailbreaking to return lost functionality.
