Low power DDR3 modules are on the way

MEMORY STANDARDS CONSORTIUM Jedec has announced a low voltage DDR3 standard that will cut power usage significantly.

The DDR3L standard sets a requirement of 1.35V for memory devices that adhere to the standard. Standard DDR3 voltage is set at 1.5V, with Jedec claiming that the reduction will result in a 15 per cent drop is power usage. Compared to DDR2, the drop is an impressive 40 per cent.

While DDR3 is commonly used in consumer systems, Jedec is pitching the positive effects of DDR3L towards servers. "This significant reduction in power consumption, especially in memory-intensive systems, will have dramatic benefits in areas such as power supply demand, system cooling requirements and potential packaging density."

Jedec is claiming that production of 1.35V DDR3L will ramp up quickly, with a number of major DRAM manufacturers pledging support. A spokesman for Samsung said it "Anticipates rapid adoption of this standard in the marketplace, which will add considerably to the movement for greener components, something we’ve been aggressively supporting for our power-conscious customers."

With being green so fashionable, there's no doubt DDR3L's lower power consumption will prove to be not only useful but popular. µ

Don't feed the bot !

Seriously, never ever respond to one of its comments - it'll feel the attention and grow bigger !

Just ignore it, and cautiously skirt around its postings so as not to arouse it.

Maybe some day it will die of boredom, and we will be free of its inane babblings that the editors somehow are incapable of moderating, even when you complain that these posts are off-topic, incomprehensible and not even funny.

What's with the obfuscated comments

Dear [LIMBO lI] and others in past threads,

Can you please improve your use of the English language and grammar. Some comments look like keyboard diarrhoea. Sentences are either hard to understand or completely incomprehensible.

What is the point of writing a comment that cannot be read by others. This will take extra effort and several extra minutes in a WP program but if it makes the comment readable it's worth it. I’m no Rhodes Scholar in grammar or spelling but I’m sure a typical English speaking 12yr old child could understand what I say.

Power????

When did anyone ever worry about memory sucking ones power supply dry, its usually Hi end video cards and cpu. But then again everyone has to do their part to keep this planet green.

I have owned a 4gb kit myself for over 6 months now and they are great...so is the news just that the obsolete JEDEC suddenly had a brain-fart and decided its ok?
