THE TOP FIVE PC manufacturers now include Apple according to analyst house Canalys and it's all down to the Ipad.
According to Canalys' quarterly survey of the PC industry the Ipad launch ensured that Apple grabbed six per cent of the portable PC segment in the second quarter of the year, with over three million units flogged. In contrast the market for netbooks slowed over the last six months.
"Apart from the 'Apple effect', the Ipad owes its success to a lack of advancement in other portable computing segments, such as netbooks," said Canalys principal analyst Chris Jones.
"To capture share moving forward, PC makers will have to take the netbook to the next level or go after new customer segments with their own pads."
By 2012 the sales of tablet computers like the Ipad will have overtaken those of netbooks as other manufacturers pile into the market, the report suggests. Sales in the tablet market are expected to reach 12.5 million units in 2010 and 66 million by the end of 2014.
"As the number of consumers with multiple devices increases, it will also be important for pads to seamlessly integrate with existing equipment," said Canalys senior analyst Natalie Spitz. µ
iPad, a PC? I thought it's just a glorified iPod! Than iPod is a PC too! Also every phone that can type sms and play video!
The first PCs couldn't multi-task, had less memory and were slower than the iPhone. However it is stupid that they have to bolster apple figures by making up rubbing about its phones being Macs. Who can afford a Mac? But it is sort of possible with one of those daft contracts to afford an iPhone
And certainly not a PC either...
It should at least be able to properly run more than one thing at once.
Wow, by that definition, my Rockbox-running mp3 player from 2003 is a "PC" too! Afterall, it can run apps, and has an OS, and other great things.
