Which? calls for ISPs to be more honest

And deliver what they promise
Tue Jul 27 2010, 09:10

CONSUMER ADVOCATE Peter Vicary-Smith, the CEO of Which? has hit out at ISPs for not being upfront about broadband speeds.

Vicary-Smith said that there is a growing gap between the actual broadband speeds delivered and those advertised by some internet service providers (ISPs).

He noted that Ofcom has also waded into the problem of ISPs advertising services that they did not deliver.

"Its great that Ofcom has taken action to improve the information provided by ISPs at the point of sale, and that customers are now able to end their contract without penalty if the service they receive is significantly different to that promised," he said.

But dispite Ofcom's finger wagging some ISPs continue to advertise ever-increasing speeds that bear little resemblance to what most people can achieve in reality, he said.

"Which? wants the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to step up to the mark and put an end to these misleading claims once and for all." µ

How about this?

Is it possible to calculate the average minimum speed?

What can be guaranteed?

How are the ISPs expected to guarantee anything about your network speed? The fastest network in the world is useless if the server you are contacting is overloaded and slow.

So What is the answer?

So how would you advertise the speed ...
- average over a month?
- for a specific location?
- minimum & maximum?
- minimum guaranteed at all times?

Looks impossible to do so I guess best just ignore it anyway.
