HTC looks to trump the Iphone 4 with Super LCD

Not enough AMOLED

SMARTPHONE MAKER and Apple rival HTC has released a statement on Super LCD (SLCD) in what might be either a reaction to hype over the Iphone 4 'retina' display or simply a way to meet demand.

HTC said that it will introduce Super LCD for the HTC Desire and Google Nexus One later this summer, with previous reports having claimed that Samsung isn't keeping up with HTC's demand for AMOLED displays.

The SLCD technology is better performing than earlier LCD panels such as the advanced technology AMLCD adopted by the Iphone 4, with around five times better power management.

Samsung has been supplying HTC with AMOLED panels for the devices, which do not use backlights, and are thinner and better performing than previous LCD panels. But as the Inquirer reported earlier this month, the Korean firms are struggling to meet demand.

Android-based smartphones were aggressively adopting AMOLED as opposed to AMLCD. But because of supply problems HTC is now turning to SLCD.

"The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

"The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC's current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance."

Last week LG Display confirmed that it was having problems keeping up with LED screen demand for the Ipad. µ

Reflective mode would be nice

If they are going to the extent of having new LCDs fabricated, why not just license reflective/transmissive switchable LCDs from Pixel Qi? The ability to read your display in full sunlight and comfortably read e-books without backlight-induced eyestrain would more than make up for any slight decrease in pixel density WRT the Iphone4. And shaving 80% off the power consumption would also give phones with reflective-mode LCDs unbeatable battery life.

After all, if you can't read the display because the ambient light is too high (or your battery is dead), all the pixels in the world make no difference at all. Whoever comes out with a decent reflective-mode LCD smartphone will probably outsell the Iphone in short order.

re: retina "hype"

Yeah, it's not "Hype." I almost turned in my iPhone4 for a Galaxy S, until I saw the Galaxy S's screen - it looks like it has vast, black ditches between the pixels. YUCK.

Hype? No. Hope? yes. Android needs to catch up to that badly.

Yes please...

I waited for ages for Apple to stick a decent screen resolution on the iPhone. Now, having heard too many bad things about iOS and getting increasingly annoyed with Windows Mobile, I'm waiting for a decent Android option. There's no way I'm living with a PenTile matrix, though (my other half has a Desire, but it would annoy me), and WVGA is so last year dahlings, so the sooner we get DVGA or (for 4") XGA/SXGA/720p on a phone, the better.

And a picoprojector (854x480 will do). And a laser keyboard. And a pony.

Get it out the door, someone. My credit card is waiting.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
