IT IS GPU FUN for all the family with Nvidia's Parallel Nsight software, which the company says is an integrated development environment (IDE) for General Purpose GPU (GPGPU) accelerated applications.
Parallel Nsight is used for developing and deploying HPC cluster applications. These HPC clusters' parallel processing GPGPU capabilities are used in fields such as oil and gas exploration, bioscience and finance.
But Nvidia's IDE can also be used for more serious projects such as developing video games. Nsight's Graphics Debugger allows developers to debug all HLSL graphics shaders directly on the GPU. What more could they want? The Graphics Inspector allows all sorts of complicated real-time examination of DirectX rendering calls and whatnot and allegedly this means developers will be able to quickly identify rendering errors. Better sooner than later, we say.
If that isn't enough, Visual Studio developers can use Parallel Nsight to debug CUDA C/C++ applications on the GPU, with the same familiar tools and techniques as on the CPU. Sanford Russell, Nvidia GPU computing general manager pointed out why this is so important. "With more than six million developers, Visual Studio is one of the world's most popular development environments for Windows-based applications and services," he said.
Parallel Nsight software supports Windows HPC Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows Vista, and works closely with Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Professional edition. Nvidia has also released its CUDA Toolkit 3.1, an update to its CUDA software development kit. µ

they reckoned the 'femidom' (or whatever it was called) would revolutionise performance only to arrive too late to be any good. it was massively overpriced and outperformed by ati's 59xx range which cost less!
i think theyve invested in hype-mongers instead of technology that produces the goods

I see repeated claims that GPGPU is where the money is. But seriously, how many home users etc. are actually GPGPU-users? How many run scientific applications that actually take advantage of massive parallel computing?
It's nV-created hype in a niche market.

You know, nVidia isn't the only company making gaming cards.
GPU's are just hardware. Whether or not nVidia optimizes them more for GPGPU, Microsoft will still get Direct X running on them.
And, it didn't take fancy DX11 gaming cards to get hardcore classics like Doom running.
High end, hardcore PC gaming is sadly, almost dead. People have been saying for years this would happen, and it's finally come to pass. With GPGPU computing, Nvidia is focusing on where the money is.
...when I felt giddy inside whenever I read a headline about GPUs, because there was a good chance the main article would lead to some screenshots or videos of new special effects eyecandy the GPU manufactures were pushing.
Now it's all about GPGPUs and optimized parallel processing. Not very giddy inducing.
