HARDWARE ALL-ROUNDER Samsung has released a Spinpoint MT2 1TB 2.5-inch internal hard drive.

The Spinpoint MT2 is destined for mobile storage products like Samsung's own S2 Portable 1TB USB drives. Samsung claimed it will be put to use for digital TVs, home theatre kits and set-top boxes.

The Spinpoint MT2 spins at 5400rpm with an 8MB buffer memory, supports a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface and employs 333GB per-platter technology. It also has some of Samsung's tailored technologies like Silentseek and Noiseguard to minimise noise in operation.

Samsung reckons the Spinpoint MT2's performance and reliability have been boosted thanks to better suspension for multidisc. Apparently it offers a 20 per cent increase in read/write performance and has lower power consumption compared with competitive drives.

It is shock protected up to 400Gs in use and 800G when powered down. Samsung's dynamic balancing technology bolsters stability and reliability under high-performance loads.

"The new Spinpoint MT2 drive offers the largest capacity in what has previously been offered as an option for portable digital devices," said I.C. Park, VP of storage marketing at Samsung.

Samsung said initial shipments are available but hasn't named a price on the 1TB capacity drives. µ
