TOYMAKER FOR THE WELL HEELED Apple, reeling from having to give away rubber bands to make its Iphone 4 work, is about to charge Ipad users to upgrade to the latest version of the Ithings OS.
The Ipad, which shipped with IOS 3, had been scheduled to receive the upgrade to IOS 4, Apple's revolutionary multi-tasking operating system, sometime this autumn, for free. However now there are reports that Apple is about to slap on a charge for the upgrade.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs did a big song and dance about Iphone OS 4, using large fonts to emphasise the scores of new features that are included. Clearly overcome at the enormity of the update, Jobs could only be bothered to detail but a few.
The updated operating system tries to bring IOS up to feature parity with Google's Android operating system but fails miserably, thanks to the restrictions placed on it by the fruit themed toymaker.
The tactic of charging for IOS updates has been going on for some time with Ipod Touch users. Apparently the cappuccino firm thinks that those customers are getting away without contributing enough to the church of Jobs' coffers, therefore it is enforcing supplementary payments.
It's understandable that Jobs would charge his Ipad laden followers money for something so basic. After all, he convinced them to purchase a £400 Iphone that isn't a phone. Then again, the Iphone 4 isn't particularly good at being a phone either, so perhaps we're not giving the Ipad its due.
Though this information was obtained in a nudge-nudge, wink-wink sort of way, Apple did not deny that it is considering introducing the Ipad tax.
After Jobs' recent embarrassment of being forced to give away 10-cent rubber bands to hundreds of thousands of Iphone 4 punters, only the most ardent fanbois will be surprised to see another opportunistic cash grab by Apple. µ

This rumor was already written to be fiction on the day this was printed. How come no update here?
"Rumors of Apple charging iPad owners for iOS 4 upgrade are false
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/07/20/apple_rumored_but_unlikely_to_charge_ipad_owners_for_ios_4_upgrade.html
Why not? If people were already stupid enough to buy an iPad in the first place, they'll definitely pay for the privilege to upgrade their software too.
@james
Plagiarizing Nick I think.
Mac forums are taking a pounding at the moment, with people complaining that the automatic "upgrade" to iOS4 on their iPhone-3 has effectively turned it into a paperwieght.
It's a 100% lie. They've announced it's free to combat this rumor.
Now you're just making crap up.
Just read this. What a load of crap. Mate has Steve Jobs F*!ked your misses or something whats with the propaganda campaign against Apple. If they are charging for the IOS so what? Has no other software company on the planet ever charged for a operating system upgrade before. Get a Life.
Google doesn't charge for updates.
Wow!! Apple will be charging their iPad consumers for software updates?!! Hahahaha! Not even webOS or Android operating system charge their consumers for software updates!? Once the Android tablets and the PalmPad are launched, iPad will certainly be doomed for ripping off their own consumers.
There is no such thing as bad publicity.
Apple's cash equation:
Bad Publicity = 3M new iPhone4 owners
Grumpy much?
I really hate to distract your rant with facts, but you are completely and utterly wrong.
So, your job description really isn't "reporter," is it? If so, do you ever get the chance to do any? Or do you limit yourself to writing fictional pieces such as this?
iAds means Apple benefits from the update.
This could be an Apple 'distraction rumour' though.
It will certainly be free to turn the iPad into a gizmondo like device.
Typical National Inquirer journalism.
Lawrence, I've seen a lack of writing skill and finish in your work and people have commented on it since day one. At least check the facts and give proofs like proper reporters do. Try to show some credibility and give credit to the website you stole this from. Instead, it seems like you're being paid by each article you write, so you're trolling the other websites and passing their work as your own. This initial article and many others were written in March! Did it take you this long to find and copy it? Did you even try to download the iPad manual to confirm this yourself? I doubt it or else you would have been paid for the additional words you would have typed. Common man, I like good news reporting like everyone else, but I wouldn't believe it because there's no supporting evidence, unless "I read it on another website" could be called that.
I don't like to pay for upgrades, especially when they're warranted on defective products like the bloated carcass of Vista. The iPad works well, but still I wouldn't be happy to pay for a major OS upgrade either so recent after the product's release date. For this reason I don't believe this news-rumour.
and I write for The Inquirer. I don't get any yum-yums from the ladies, only from the fridge. My belly is large, my hygiene is poor. I'm utterly humorless but I try my dead-level best to mask it with sarcasm. I'm not very good with sarcasm either, but the next steps down are bad poetry, word salad, and madness.
And other software makers don't charge for upgrades? I am completely in awe over the criticism for a commercial company to offer a new product (i.e., new software version) for sale.
Not to mention that this is a rumor and directly contradicts that Apple said iOS for iPad would be free.
The author clearly has an in for Apple, and readers are advised to this so-called "reporting" with a large grain of salt.
Apple has been charging $129 for OSX service packs for years, right? The only service pack for which he eased up on his price-gouging was the one that was released more-or-less at the same time as Windows 7.
So why shouldn't he charge for IOS service packs too? Judging from the OSX experience, there are plenty of people who will pay it.
They've already announced it's free in the EULA.
Here's the the relevant section from the iPad Software License Agreement:
"Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. "
I must admit these articles do grow on me, once you get over the fact the author speaks bluntly about everything :P
They deserve it for supporting this a$$h0le lunatic.
Some has to learn in the hard way.
