WE GAVE YOU a UK exclusive heads up on the Ubuntu Linux derivative, Chromium-based cloud-centric Peppermint Linux OS in an interview a couple of weeks back. Now the team that bought out the web-centric Peppermint is ready to go with Peppermint Ice.
Peppermint Ice has Google's Chromium as the default web browser and the Peppermint developers claim it runs ridiculously fast on its cloud-centric OS.
Lead developer Kendall Weaver wrote a Site Specific Browser [SSB] for Peppermint Ice. This means that Peppermint Ice is capable of launching web apps, cloud apps, Saas and Paas.
The team said that opening a web based application calls up the custom SSB via the Chromium browser, making the Peppermint Ice SSB act like locally installed software but delivered via the cloud.
Weaver stayed away from the current fashion of offering tabbed browsing in the Chromium browser for Peppermint Ice. He claims that you can lose data if the browser, service or site crashes.
However, the Peppermint Ice SSB is assigned for one function only. As it's isolated and only opens the web app you chose to launch, it won't affect the rest of your system if it crashes and burns.
"We are really excited to release Peppermint Ice to the public today," co-developer Shane Remington told The INQUIRER.
"People love our OS One and asked what we could do with Chromium, if we could integrate this peppy browser with the proven speed of Peppermint? The answer is yes," he continued.
Peppermint Ice is out now for you to download and try. µ
