America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilisation in between. - Oscar Wilde
SHINY TOY MAKER Apple wheeled out full time spinmeister and occasional CEO Steve Jobs to orchestrate damage control in the wake of its Iphone 4 antenna snafu.
The emergency press conference had everyone wondering how Jobs would explain away a fundamental design fault that has been demonstrated hundreds of times. It needed the master of ceremonies to be on top form, and boy did he put on a show.
For those reading on an Iphone 4 we'll cut to the chase before you lose connectivity. As we predicted, Iphone 4 users will be given a free Bumper wrap-around. Rejoice in knowing that the once sleek device you shelled out hundreds of pounds for will be encased in a rubber band. Apple might just as well send out strips of duct tape.
Learning about this act of generosity came at the price of having to endure 90 minutes of Steve Jobs' reality distortion field. The press conference was, for the most part, a patronising lecture, with Jobs repeatedly saying that Apple "loves its users". We think any company would if it could get away with selling its customers faulty gadgets at high prices and repeat that cycle in an infinite loop.
Not surprisingly Apple knew it was under the gun, and it gave access only to friendly journalists. Our application was denied, with our reporter being told that the company was "Limited on space for tomorrow's event and can not accommodate your request." A fair reason, until you notice that there were plenty of empty seats at the event. Maybe Apple had a lot of last-minute cancellations. Sure.
Instead of doing the right thing and admitting Apple's mistakes, Jobs, seemingly living in a state of denial, decided to gracelessly lay the blame on the entire mobile phone industry.
After trying and failing to justify the dismal wireless reception capabilities of the Iphone 4 by holding a Blackberry Bold 9700, HTC's Droid Eris and Samsung's Omnia II, Jobs proclaimed that "phones aren't perfect". Well yes, but for the Iphone 4 perfection is a dot on the horizon. Not content with blaming competing mobile phone manufacturers, Jobs also appealed to science by saying that Apple hadn't found a way "around the laws of physics", as though that could explain his blunder of putting a bare metal antenna on the outer edge of a mobile phone that, by its nature, is designed to be handheld.
Acting like a schoolboy reeling off lame excuses, Jobs, who proudly claimed that the Iphone 4 was the best phone ever, said that it, like all phones, fell prey to "weak spots". This was, in effect, to blame Iphone 4 reception problems on the mobile networks, including Apple's exclusive partner AT&T in the US.
Apparently Jobs also likes to think that the problem is due to the fact that there simply aren't enough cases available for the Iphone 4. He said that the firm's previous Iphone, the 3GS, didn't face this problem because cases designed for the Iphone 3G would fit. And, according to Jobs, only 20 per cent of those who buy the Iphone 4 don't buy a matching rubber band.
Holding the phone, Jobs repeatedly called the Iphone 4 reception problem a non-issue, affecting merely a small minority of users. But Apple claims to have sold 1.7 million of the things. If the so-called fix is to wrap a tacky piece of rubber around a £500 phone and 20 per cent of users don't have these, then that small minority of users affected by Antennagate is about 340,000 people. But let's not get hung up on figures, we're talking about the iconic Iphone 4 here.
The truth of the matter is that Apple's loyal customers are getting hoodwinked with a third rate solution to a major issue. Many of those who spent hours queuing and forking over hundreds of pounds did so for a mobile phone that could at least make phone calls without having to be wrapped in a tacky loop of rubber. Instead what they are ending up with is a manufacturer that insists on defacing their expensive device, which it sells based on its clean lines and sleek, seamless style, in order to cover up its flawed engineering and consequent inability to meet its most basic functional requirement.
Jobs noted that Apple is "not perfect", a point few would argue against. However despite his protestations that his mob of shiny toy merchants care about the people who line Apple's pockets so handsomely, his behaviour should be seen as the gold standard of corporate irresponsibility in the consumer electronics industry.
Faced with a billion dollar bill for doing the right thing, Steve Jobs chose the cheap and easy way out, an option that belies his claim that Apple is "an engineering company". µ

I like this this article! well done on showing everything that's lacked with apple and Steve Jobs - ignore the negative comments.... apple fanboys
iBand Aid fixes iPhone4 antenna problems. Antenn-aid for iPhone 4 is a custom sized vinyl sticker for your iPhone 4. When placed over the lower left corner of the antenna it may improve signal performance*.

The iPhone Aint cheap
It is expected that the iphone was tested before it was sold. But I am not sure they took their time testing. So, they are in a hurry to push their garbage on us.
I watched the Steve Jobs apology, and it was very weak.
Yes it could be true a lot of people didn't have problems with their phones, but a lot of people now use cases, so they would of never had the problem.
Myself, being left handed for sure would have a problem. But since I use a case to protect my phone I would never notice the problem. I read the review at anandtech, and I guess it was hard for them to get into the RF level screen, and the RD bars seems to be messed up to try to his the problem. They new of the problem and still tried to sell the phone instead of fixing it.
Still, I am not sure why they decided to make it so that the antenna is not protected. Anyone touching the antenna can change the impedence, and alter the RF performace.
Why Steve Jobs not just admit he messed up?
Anyways I am grad of this messup, it give a chance for other good smart phones to take over.
Apple does not have to have a good product all the time. (or pretend they do). THey have a huge EGO.
I guess this Lawrence Latiff prick changes bias depending on who he writes for. Check out his review of iPhone 3G on UKGamer a couple of years ago:
http://www.ukgamer.com/articles/395/1/Apple_iPhone_3G.html
The title of the article is "Pocket Perfection" and at the end he says:
"So can you get the iPhone 3G and not feel bad about it? Absolutely. It's a superb device which although still expensive, is worth the outlay for most who can afford it. "
It's amazing how badly iPhone 4 sucks. It's also amazing how Apple Fanboys will defend it until the end of time. I will freely note first off that I am not a fanboy by any stretch, however I do have the 3GS, which I love. I did buy the iPhone 4, and it was so terrible that I returned it and went back to my current 3GS. It was just that bad. It's hilarious to me what Apple fanboys are saying in forums and blogs all across the web, defending this thing like it's some sacred gem, pretending all its issues don't even exist. Ridiculous. Check out the video I made on YouTube about "An Apple Fanboy's view of Steve Jobs, the Iphone 4, and Life... ". It's at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPcQ-cYg8iA

I asked the ASA whether a company can class their product as "magical" and how they can actually prove its magical qualities.
The ASA responded that using the term "magical" in this case was perfectly ok and wouldnt mislead consumers.
I wrote back and asked them if they wanted to buy some of my "magical beans" at only £200 a go. I have yet to get a response.
So there you go folks you now have the ASA's approval to clas any product no matter how faulty, as "magical".
Its nice to see someone not sucking upto jobs PR.
The fact is Apple said patch would fix it, they cant fix the band design.
The part of the selling point was the great design of the casing yet to use properly you have to hold in certain way and is best with a case which takes away the look.
Reports need to reflect this signal issue, I have been using phones from the first ones that were bricks with about 6hrs standby 10mins call and never had a phone where one finger can stop the phone getting signal as my bros ip4 does.
This might not affect everyone but will affect enought to make it an issue, people have not complained alot yet as they said the patch would fix it.
Now regarding press conference and love of customers, this was called because the main people were flustered and thats not the buying public its share holders, he called conference after the share price had a fall after analyst were saying Apple need to do something.
All corporations work like this Apple is no exception, Apple never really admits mistakes and even on this there passing the buck to physics which are the same before they designed phone as they are now and trying to use other manufacturers who never said they designed a phone to look good then said but must use a case.
I will get an ip4 but when i can feel happy that browsing web and making calls will be better/equal to my phone not worse.
But that entire "conference" was just smoke and mirrors . Steve was dead on the money you cant get around the laws of physics . You had 18 phds at your disposal and your trying to tell me not one of them said erm putting this on the outsides a bad idea Steve . It's a bad design and no magic bumpers or sticky backed plastic is going to fix it . Apple have a history with nice looking kit that is badly designed . Hands up whoever tried using a cube in hot weather where its revolutionary heat tunnel failed to work or an imac that turned itself on and off when you walked past it . Apple takes style over practicality every time . It may look cool but the reality is the cooler it looks the worse it tends to work .
I've become progressively disenchanted by Apple's quality of late. I remember (as it certainly wasn't long ago) when you chose an Apple for quality and style. Now it seems just style and even that appears to be an endangered species. Are Apple pushing too hard to please shareholders? You're losing your magical touch Cupertino, don't end up an up market Dell.
They are at risk of falling under the wheels of their own ambition. Not only that but the 'also ran' Android has become a real contender and will likely surpass iPhone OS and the iPhone this year. I loved Apple for their quality and style but now what's left. Please keep the computer segment tight (and improve QA a tiny weenie bit too for iMac) and take your time between iphone releases to bring out something truly 'Magical and Revolutionary' but that is blessed with proper Apple 'Quality and Style'
Regarding the primary use of an iPhone- if it was as a phone I probably wouldnt have bought an iPhone.
It being a phone is a handy addition to it being or allowing me to use my media player, work email, internet and the miriad of apps and games (for my daughter ;-) ). All of which are fab.
Not having a go at all- as I agree a phones most important function is the phone bit, just not in the case of the iPhone- its all about the extras.
Im no Apple Evangelist, I work in Wintel servers for starters and havent touched a Mac since the Plus but I love the iPhone, its fun, it works and as a bonus I can use it as a phone.
As for the signal problems- no better or worse than other 3G phones Ive had including Blackberry devices.
You seem to all be missing the point of buying an iPhone - is it bought to be a phone? No.
So, covering the antenna with a giant rubber band is spoiling the real reason for buying it - it's a fashion accessory!
Everybody who buys an iPhone gets it out EVERY chance that they can, and is that what other phone owners do? No, it's because you have an iPhone to show it off, and show off how "trendy" you are.
Covering the phone with a bit of (required) rubber only does one thing, it covers up the looks of the phone, and that was one of it's BIG selling points - how it looked.
Is the writer "bitter" at not being invited? I very much doubt it, because if you're not an iPhan, then you probably wouldn't want to go and see the Fruity Fuhrer give excuses why the "magical" device isn't as magical as they made out!!!
@Tired, again
What if you paid €500 for the latest Jimmy Choos and you complained the ankle strap was too tight for you to walk in them due to a design fault but Jimmy Choo denied any problem for months then eventually posted you a pair of fluro rubber socks to wear everytime you wore your shoes.
You'd look an utter tool when spotted using said shoes and for swalling Jimmys rubbish and for shelling out $500 for something that was meant to look beautiful but now looks a complete joke lol
We're entitled to laugh at you and we will, very hard indeed.
Who the hell buys an iPhone / iPod that doesn't immediately put it in a case anyway?
The complete anti Apple bias of all of Mr Latifs articles aside; I simply do not experience this issue as part of every day use. If I grip the phone tightly for around five minutes the signal eventually dies. However, I have no other reason to use the phone in this manner other than to demonstrate this "issue".
Which just shows that it isn't an issue at all. It's ironic that the tech blogs spend so much time criticising the Apple hype machine only to employ one of their own...
www.scirocconet.co.uk (might as well try for a back link while I'm here!)
You must be new here. This is nothing new for the INQ, or el Reg or many other non-Apple-gadget-subsidized publication. The point all the pro Apple comments seem to miss is that there em are /em iPhone 4 users that have issues, one person is not representative of the whole. While 3 of the 4 people I know who have an iPhone 4 have no issues and think it's great, the one person says she has issues but that she always has had issues. Now that may seem to validate Jobs' claim, but she specifically bought the iPhone 4 for its revolutionary design and supposed dramatically improved reception.
That, to me, is the real problem with Apple. They find it impossible to admit a mistake. Well here's a newsflash: We knew already Apple wasn't perfect, as Steve so eloquently put it on Fri, and it had to happen eventually.
Seems like Apple lovers have labeled the writer "unprofessional". But it seems like it's Apple who's being a non-pro. Oh, but wait, I guess they're pros at being slimy corp. Have to admit that they're good at it.
Looks like what PT Barnum knew what he was talking about when he noted that there's a sucker born every minute. In this case, we have one sucker, licking at one rotten apple, born every second.
Isn't the primary function of the iPhone the "phone"????
Apple choose design over function and this is what happened.
Apple choose the iBand-aid
solution to minimize costs from their errors and by trying to deflect issue by bringing in Blacckberry, Samsung, Nokia and others is very child like. Mind you, a very good portion of Apple product users are kids.
Another third-rate article, from a third-rate writer, for a third-rate publication.
this is the most unprofessional biased article i have read! it seems like you were having a winge cause you didnt get accepted to go
Wow. I've never seen a journalist so sore about NOT getting an invitation that they'd use the same tacky adjective in their article. Must have had to vent all that steam in the least amount of time, no?
To the guy who said "People need to Complain". Hell yeah~!! People DO and SHOULD complain, and that being the good ol' US of A you'd think they WOULD, wouldn't they? But HAVE they? HOW MANY of those 3 million iPhone users have actually complained? I don't think Apple can blatantly lie here -- but .55% ?? It does seem to make sense, considering they are still selling like hot cakes. Infact, everything Jobs demonstrated seemed to make sense, and after stripping my 3gs of its case, I was even able to apply the grip-of-death to that (although I couldn't lose the signal completely).
I'm waiting for my sister-in-law to show up so I can test this on her BlackBerry Bold 9700.
So those that are sore here -- you're all the usual stuff -- Apple Haters. Either you've no money to buy the next best shiny thing from Apple, or Apple snubbed you on an invitation. Either way, you could have easily just refunded your money -- or shut up.
Apple will come out of this just fine. The fanbois won't hear a bad word said. Stockholm syndrome perhaps?
The writer sounds like the Perez Hilton of the Tech world. It's a new approach, hope it works out for you.
I don't own, nor have I ever owned an iphone. I'm currently using an android phone which is cool. That doesn't mean I have to hate everything Apple does. I love their stuff, but my phone was cheaper.
I love Jimmy Choos, but if I chose to buy their latest design which turned out to have a manufacturing fault which made the ankle strap too tight, I'd be angry and complain. If they later offered me a repair or refund, I'd consider it problem solved. I wouldn't say that for my £500 I want them water proofed, in a totally different colour with a lower heel, as that is not what was offered for sale. It seems strange that the sudden demand for flash has reared its head again. They told you it wouldn't have flash before it hit the shops.
SO because dog face is barred at the door he writes a crybaby article? Nice professionalism. What are you 5 years old? Are you over your tantrum yet?
I don't have an iPhone, but I didn't like that Apple took so long to respond, but it's more than other companies in this industry have done. When non-techies got shinny new PC's with WinME or Vista did they get anything for free when it inevitably screwed-up during release day? Nope. What about all those people that bought songs from Microsoft's music store and then shutdown the DRM site so the music can't be played? How about pushing a crap product like the Kin and then discontinuing it right after you bought it. Or any of the defective garbage products this industry makes that people get stuck with?
This is more than any of the wanna be's have ever done. The facts show that demand is still very high and returns are really low. Even randomly I saw a talkshow yesterday that people were asking the host if they were giving the iPhone away that was demoing a service.
With this level of professionalism Lawrence you'll never get a real job anywhere else as a journalist.
My Nokia E52 is an example. The antenna is at the bottom side. But it is not exposed outside the box.
I have an iPhone 3G, and a 3GS. I love the phone as a hand held computing device. But, alas as a professional phone user, I think the phone is seriously flawed.
Reception - how come my cheap £100 Nokia gets 5 bars when my iPhone gets 2 or less?
Battery life - they don't make the day unless you turn 3G off. Seems pretty pointless when you need 3G for the computing side...
Call drop outs. I get loads, other phones don't.
Perhaps I'm holding it wrong, maybe I don't worship Steve Jobs enough. However, I am a realistic person, who understands both the benefits and flaws of the device. I won't be buying a Generation 4, the phone piece is bad enough without me having to hold it a certain way or add some crap band to it.
Get real folks, this journalist is merely pointing out the obvious. Perhaps the emperor's new clothes are a bit transparent?
A real life / real world iPhone user....
I ask anyone capable (Inq, any other site or tech guy that may be looking in...)
Check the other phones location of antenna, and how near it is to the 'outside' of the case.... :P
I think you will find, they are mostly on top, or near to top, of the phone - please say if any phones ever made has one on the bottom!!
you could go even further, has ANY antenna been fixed on the bottom of the device it was attached to?? Radios/ CB - car, motorcycle, building of radio station, you name it..... :P
I always get a bit annoyed when I read what is quite clearly a biased review of a product and usually one which is there to attract continued advertising from manufacturers who would likely go elsewhere if said reviews were in anyway unkind even if true. I read The Enquirer because I like to hear it as it is.
For everyone complaining that the review was in anyway biased, it was no where near so selective as Apple were about it's audience at the press junket. Not allowing in journo's who have not yet been taken in by 'Job's shiny toys' just show's (To the intelligent mind at least) that Mr Jobs was just putting a bit of spin on what was arguably a bit of an oversight when designing the phone. As a device I have to say it is a nice bit of kit, for most lovers of all things Apple such issues are a minor annoyance, for the rest of us (techies mostly), the list of bad points unfortunately outweighs the good to the extent that we shop elsewhere for our hardware.
You were warned about this before you went ahead with the design by one of your engineers but being another typical retarded yank you disregarded the intel and thought everything would be alright because it looks good and it sounds 'cool' having an antenna built into the chasis. They blatantly knew after designing it it was a problem, why do you think this time apple are producing the bumpers themselves this time around? and how tacky your iphone 4 will be now with a brightly coloured rubber Jonny strapped to it lol. it just makes me laugh it really really does, to be fair i would say you were all sheep buying the iphone 4 but its not like you knew you were being sold a designed flawed money pit. i just love the way jobs cant hold his hands up and just confess its an issue, he has to beat about the bush all the time, being fobbed off with stating its the fact he cant change the laws of physics, no your right you cant but you know the rules and should know what happens when you touch an antenna of like a hand held tv, it interferes. i do feel sorry for the people who have purchased one to be fobbed off like this, but truth is the people that buy it are usually the ones he can fob them off and then the buyers will then repeat his words like hes some sort of god lol.
I am lol'ing at all the stupid n00bey apple fanboys on here saying its a "biased article" and that the reporter is just "pissed he didnt get to go".
Its been proven to be a major problem. Apple, just basically suck.
Toy manufacturer? I stopped reading after the first paragraph. Your appalling journalistic standards are only surpassed by your ignorance. This is the point where you are immediately supposed to label me as a fanboy, with no evidence of my devotion to Apple products, but simply because I've 'dissed' your article.
I'm also savvy enough to know that by replying to your article, that this will just make your editor happy. BUt trust me when I say, if I continue to see this level of reporting from the Inquirer, I'll soon not take anything serious I read here. - Is this the Inquirer or the National Enquirer?
Praise the almight god-walking-on-earth/big-brother Jobs... and you're doing your job well.
Tell the thruth about how snApple is screwing its customers (just like every other company, but on a totally new HIGHER level)... and then you're biased.
Too bad they don't ship brains with iPORNS!
The problem is the Apple total ignorance.
Antenna, proximty sensor, Adobe Flash, lack of Multitasking (in old iOS/iPhones) and so on.
Also, crying that other phones do have same problem is ironical. They are much cheap.
Also, you Apple, will refund what? If I have signed yet 2-yr contract with my telco operator, will you help me to cancel it? Of course, no...
Yes, The Inq is biased against Apple, as millions of people are (me included). Promoting their products to "magical" status and creating hordes of fanatical followers is Apple's marketing strategy, a good strategy, but has a side effect. It also creates haters. And haters tend to bash you especially when they have a point.
The Inquirer is an Apple hater, but this time they got a point. The most expensive and awaited phone must be able to make phone calls!!
Your piece is not biased. You totally nailed it. You have succeeded in writing the best piece of all those I've seen. Most journalists have taken the sucker punch. You haven't. Well done. Like you say it is an insult to buyers and Apple probably knew about the problem. Jobs didn't deny that they didn't know in advance of launch. Either that or their quality control is rubbish. The truth is it's an amazing smartphone but NOT an amazing phone. If it were just a phone the return rate would probably be sky high.
You have to agree its a PR masterstroke (look at the coverage) and if I was a shareholder I might be impressed. As a buyer the message is obviously let the early adopters suffer the pain.
Has anyone commenting here actually experienced iPhone4 reception issues first hand?
Sounds to me like any problems that may have existed are sorted. Think I'll be buying one of these devices when they next become available. Still the best phone on the market by an absolute mile.
Strange how the two people I know personally who have an iPhone4 have had no problems whatsoever, almost makes you wonder if the story's been whipped up by the gutter press.
I stray to this site form google news every once in a while and it never ceases to amaze me how negatively scathing the so called journalism is.
it just seems a little childish and not journalism, it's obviously an anti-apple site.
Under the belt comments aside, this article hits Apple's comical press conference.
Do you realise that Apple is actually giving away free condoms so you will be safe from drop calls? Think of it, everytime you make a call you are having safe sex.
Apple now blames God for the laws of physic. Every wireless reception device manufactured to date since the Edison days will not let you touch a exposed antenna. The largest organ of the human body is one big capacitor. The bigger the capacitor the higher is the signal attenuation.
It's a wonder none of the journalists pointed this out.
Sounds like someone is a bit upset that they missed out on an invite......
1-Steve said 3m sold, not 1.7.
2-Steve showed demos of other popular phones losing signal when gripped.
3-They DID admit there is a problem, but chose to focus on it being a general phone problem, which they proved is the case via said demos.....
4-If i had upgraded to an iPhone 4 and had these problems i'd have returned it and got my money back (or changed network here in the uk) so its not as tho we have to put up with it.
5-Please write articles based on facts given not personal opinions.
Read: Consumer Reports now recommends using duct tape to solve the iPhone 4 reception issue. Of Course an economic Issue Comes Up. Sparklee' Metal Flake Duct Tape Be Best.

@Varsha - 'So you should ask every phone maker to fix every single phone issue !! Why are u being bias to Apple!!!!'
If a device fails to do the #1 task it is supposed to do then it's fair to call this out. I'm not sure about you, but most people dont need a phone that can take great pictures, but with which you can make phone calls only 10% of the time.
For the readers who claim that you have the right to buy any phone you want - Yes, that is correct, but if a company sells you a lemon, they are liable for it. You cant just sell flawed products and then tell customers, 'Well, you had a choice to buy something else, so it's your fault that you bought this!'. That's really bs!
The way i see it, the primary issue here is not about the defect (which is obvious!) - it's about Apple's arrogance and attitude in dealing with it.
Apple shows a complete lack of integrity here. Apple should put up their hands, admit an engineering problem and recall the faulty devices. Customers would still respect them.
Instead they blame the way users hold their phones, networks and everything under the sun!
Jobs first told users that nothing was wrong with the new iPhone and that they should hold their phones differently. Now he shows 'generosity' and offers free 'rubber' to keep the phones 'safe' for use. Why would he do this if there really wasnt a problem? and if there was a problem all along, why not have come clean upfront (instead of telling users to hold the phone differently)
Bottomline, it's ironical that a company that prides itself in being different than every other company, starts benchmarking themselves with these very same companies when it comes to dealing with defects! ("whine, while - everyone else has this problem too - whine, whine)
As a custome i will say that Google's Andriod is the best thing to happen to the industry. Hopefully they will shake Apple a bit and make them realize that they cant keep screwing their customers over.
With the arrogant attitude Job and Apple are showing, I'm not sure this will happen.
...blah...blah...iphone...apple...I'm not a journalist...sob...
another day, another inquirer bites the dust
Hey why don't you ever write something positive? It seems that all of your is a long string of negative points of view on anything going on in the market. This publication had much better content when Mike Magee just started it and was writing himself. You seem to go beyond the "tabloid approach to technology" to just a plain ugly uninteresting hate writing.
i am an apple lover! when the iphone 4 had problems, coupled with the initial steve jobs reply i was upset. i thought this would be the end of my love for them...but after seeing him today, he has redeemed himself in my eyes. ALL mechanical devices will have some sort of a problem. no other mobile phone i have owned has ever done anything to make me happy. and the writer of this article did seem very upset that he was denied entrance. i bet if we look into it far back enough, the writer loved apple until the day he got denied access. don't believe what anyone else says, buy what you like and believe what you want to believe. don't let people like the one that wrote this article, be a deciding factor of the way you live. follow user reviews and i can almost bet you will never loose!
I'm assuming you weren't invited as it was intended for journalists.
Your article is so bias! U didn't get a chance to go poor baby so basically attack them!!
What kind of news are you reporting?
Give the guy a chance! Every phone has a problem nothing is perfect it's true. So you should ask every phone maker to fix every single phone issue !! Why are u being bias to Apple!!!!
I have used Apple for years and now use the iPhone 4 without any issue at all.
Don't speak for everyone only for your sorry ass!
can't u return it?
In his initial product announcement, Jobs praises the Iphone4 as a "magical, incredible, fantastic" phone with a wonderful, revolutionary wrap-around stainless steel antenna.
Now he says that "they are not perfect", and is sending rubber sleeves to customers in order to cover-up the defective bare-metal antenna and make the phone work as a phone.
According to his press conference, customers can still "be happy" that, somewhere under that bulky lump of goofy-looking rubber they are talking into, there lurks a magical shiny stylishly-thin Iphone4. Others watching them talk into their blobs of rubber will similarly know that they should respect the intelligence and good taste of someone who is talking into a rubber novelty item, which "must" house a nugget of high-technology somewhere within. And that should be good enough for any loyal Apple fan.
Furthermore, the prox. sensor issue will be fixed by a "software update"..."real soon now". Ya, that worked great for the antenna, too.
Bonus trivia question: What did P.T. Barnum say was born every minute?
It sounds like this article was written by a child who is bitter at Apple about something. I agree that people should complain. It is indeed a valid problem and the antenna was advertised as a selling feature. Perhaps Jobs didn't address it in the right way. He is in a delicate position, for sure. Hell, I don't even really like the guy. The fact remains, however, that Apple is the most innovative and technologically advanced company out there. This phone, despite its antenna problem, is by far the most advanced device on the market. "Shiny toy maker" is a ridiculous way to start a poorly-written, biased article. Maybe Apple did something to screw you over or maybe you are against them because they are trendy? Either way, thumbs down!!
To hear all these news stories and read all these comments you would think that the iPhone was the only phone available on the market. People, you don't have to buy one, if you want a phone that supports flash then buy one which does, if you want a phone that doesn't need iTunes then buy one which does. Every phone manufacturer pushes their product as the best. Every phone manufacturer has problems with reception issues. It has happened on every phone that I have owned, yet the Apple problems, which are no bigger than anyone elses seem to spark of so much unhelpful and unnecessary debate. Get over it, it's a phone, and one that millions of people are happy with. Go out, buy the phone you like most and get on with your lives instead of reading inaccurate reports on this and other sites. Lets face it The Inquirer can't even get the product's name right!!
I refer to the comment from the moron that couldn't write a sentence without including the F word at least twice. Included were comments such as "It's only a phone" & "children a dying in Africa".
We can use that argument for anything.. It's only an oil leak of the coast of the USA, children are working 15 hr days in factories.
The problems made about the iPhone4 were completely valid - people Should Complain.
Jobs said he wants to please his customers - so let's get Flash, we all want it. Stop forcing us to use iTunes, let us unlock our phones.
I have had all 3 previous iPhones, never again, I will never buy from such an arrogant company again. Android, I'm yours for the taking ;)
gees, this article seems very biased cause of no invitation?. thats very unprofessional.
The commercials showed a phone without bumpers. So did the demo that Jobs gave. The 'attractive aluminum antenna' was a selling point. The picture on the box didn't include a bumper, there was no bumper in the box, and no contracts specified that a bumper would be needed.
Apple knew the phones would need bumpers, but conceled that fact until after the phones were sold.
BAit and switch.
