Iphone 4 software fix doesn't work

No surprise there
Thu Jul 15 2010, 13:40

TOYMAKER FOR THE WELL HEELED Apple sent out copies of its latest Iphone operating system only to find out that the software doesn't do what the firm claimed it would do.

iphone-4-in-handJobs' Mob had promised that the Iphone OS 4.1 would magically fix the reception issues plaguing its Iphone 4 by altering the algorithm used to display 'bars' indicating signal strength on the device's screen.

However testing by developers has shown that, to no surprise, it does nothing to alleviate reception problems for users. Infact, it makes the problem worse.

As users grapple with the Iphone 4's dodgy antenna, Apple has been adamant that its software fudge would fix the problem. The firm claimed that for years the Iphone OS has been misreporting signal strength and that Iphone OS 4.1 would provide a realistic representation of signal levels to users.

One developer recorded a video of how, by merely caressing his beloved Iphone 4, the wireless reception would go down to zero, much like before. Apple will be hoping that it's largely clueless users will be satisfied by the placebo effect of listening to their Dear Leader proclaiming that Apple has released a software fix for a hardware problem, combined with a higher version number.

The Iphone 4's antenna problem is merely one in a long list of faults with the device. Apple has been adamant that it can overcome the faults without the need for a costly recall, much like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The evidence suggests that its cunning plan to play down the situation with a largely meaningless software fix is about to backfire.

One wonders what else Jobs' Mob will think of before biting the bullet and recalling what is clearly a faulty design. µ

Jobs Has 2 iPhones

Jobs will reveal that he has ordered 2 iPhone 4's.

One for him, and one for his liver donor.

So Jobs can Facetime with the guy in his grave.

Iphone 4 reception

My son has the latest iphone 4. Held in left hand signal goes. Bought a rubber protective cover. No longer has signal loss no matter which way phone is held.

@Paul, surely you mean...

That the audience would throw their NON-problematic, NON-faulty iPhone4s for, um, no reasons Apple can fathom. There is no problem, no problem at all. Steve can take it anyway.

Conference

I hope when he tells the audience that its they are mistaken and it's a non-problem, they throw all their faulty iPhones at him.

Newsflash! Apple dragging feet on Iphone fix.

The author is full of crap!!

iOS 4.1 won't probably be out till September. IT'S STILL IN BETA!! This release is 4.0.1.

Why can't tech sites just report news? Why do most have to throw in their 2 cents worth of opinion?

iPhone need a "lemon"

It is a shame there is no "lemon law" for mobile phones similar to the automobile lemon law. That way you get a fixed product or your money back.

@Narg: Brilliant way to spin it!

But I'm afraid that you're serious.

@Mark: When did Apple admit to reception problems?

No, they're trying to finesse it that reception was already lousy -- implying not due to any problems in the phone -- but the display was indicating better than real. I think "the rest of us" *are* clear on the facts.

The fix is just too easy..

It's called a Bumper. The phone looks 10 times better with a bumper anyway, so why would this ever be a problem?

What are you talking about?

Sorry, when exactly did Apple say that the software fix would address reception issues? The point of the update is to make the display of signal strength more accurate. Please get your facts right.

Point missed

The point missed is that Apple should simply admit that they rushed out a dodgy/faulty design, recall the iThingy, and fix the problem. Not try to claim that "you're holding it wrong", "the software update will fix hardware design flaws", or "the light coming through your ears is affecting the sensors". The iPhone 4 has more issues than the fault antennae design, so tape or nail polish won't fix the sensor problem or the screen yellowing issues. Man up and admit your faulty design, Apple.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
