The Chinese government wants its own Internet
THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY is planning to use the Internet as a weapon to keep it in power.
An internal memo that accidentally ended up on the party's website detailed a plan to use the Internet in order to "create an international public opinion environment that is objective, beneficial and friendly to us."
Wang Chen - a man with more Chinese government credits to his name than Lord Mandy - continued by claiming that the effort to engineer the Internet would help in "assisting in our diplomatic battles and safeguarding our national interests."
Although much of that might seem like the crazy ramblings of a tin-pot dictator, Chen's speech takes a sinister turn when he says the Internet has "increased the government's capabilities in social management." According to Chen, Chinese government agencies at all levels "have gradually built mechanisms to guide public opinion through integrating the functions of propaganda departments," with the Internet being just another tool for the rulers to use towards that goal.
Wang also references the need for filtering content by claiming that access to foreign websites can result in "all sorts of harmful foreign information to appear on our domestic internet". All of this points to the Chinese government creating their own intranet in order to push its ideals into the minds of its populace.
Whether or not any part of China's proposed intranet will have access to the global Internet should greatly influence the usefulness of it as a communications medium. Currently China has a firewall and censors to filter out content. By creating its own network it can easily limit and control the content available online to its huge population, without having to worry about proxies or other network access obsfucation techniques.
The leaked China government memo had no information on when the Chinese version of the Internet and walled garden internet will be rolled out, but we suspect that's because it's already here and tightening. µ

Bah, using our common sense, China will have the same impact as what happened to Russia.
After dropping the Berlin Wall, Russia got democratized and look today, Russian businesses are driving the country.
Now China. Its business is democratizing today. One day, the Govt will have its wake up call when Chinese businesses will say to them to stop e+ stupid Internet move, etc. like that, and let businesses rules as everybody does.
Yup, Chinese Communism is near the end anyway...

I'm one of those hateful, dirty ol' Americans you talk about, but I must be doing something wrong. I don't steal, I'm not a druggie, I'm not a big fat whale, I don't own a gun, I've never been to a prostitute (nor am I one), I'm not depressed (mentally or economically, not sure what you're going for there), I am beholden to no one economically, and I do not drink.
Perhaps you could give me some pointers on how to become the American you think I should be.
Makes me wonder if N Korea has been China's pet project in population mind control and now they are going to start implimenting it on a grander scale.

Uhm really? Are you too young, stupid or just not a US citizen? It wasn't until the 1980s that social security numbers were even required! I didn't even have a social security number until I was 11 due to this. And, by the way, as far as US law is concerned if you have at least 1 parent of US citizenship then you are automatically a US citizen. Technically, he could have possessed dual citizenship with another country. But, the US requires you to give up any foreign citizenship if you want certain privileges here, such as voting or becoming president, at the age of 18.

You mentioned economic slavery? China does so much more damage than the US with low wages, filthy conditions, and an appalling history on human rights. The government has kept the currency low to increase exports. China is doing all it can to cause economic slavery to the rest of the world, and you accuse America of it? I think you are getting too much of your information from China's new internet of propaganda.

No. I don't blame the Chinese. The innernet (as pronounced by some) is full of degrading filth and American propaganda. I don't particularly want to see the Chinese contaminated by the American disease - crime, drugs, obesity, a fetish with guns, prostitution, depression, economic slavery and alcohol dependency. So much for the land of the free. HA. What a joke. The sad fact is the Chinese have already been unduly influenced by american filth.

Two new congressional bills allow Obama to turn off the internet. That is right, an illegal alien that uses a Connecticut social security number, can shut off the internet.
Where are those who claim to defend the democracy and liberty? That applies only to places where they cannot defend themselves? Or there needs to be oil involved? Or a dependent economy?
I'd rather have those who think "teh internets" are a "series of tubes", or just barely know how to use "the Google". -- Because their aims of total control are same as the commies, just less likely to be attained.
