SHINY TOY DESIGNER Apple is about to see its Iphone 4 unlocked by the Iphone Dev Team.

Apple iPhone 4The Iphone Dev Team has been a constant thorn in Apple's side as it has jailbroken and unlocked just about every version of the Iphone OS since its inception. While Apple and the Dev Team play a game of cat and mouse, consumers were given a trailer of the latest episode. A member of the hacking team has demonstrated a software unlock for the Iphone 4, which is the first unlock of Apple's latest shiny toy.

Demonstrating a capacity for testing that puts Apple to shame, the Dev Team hasn't released its software yet, claiming that it is still in beta and requires some tidying up prior to being made available for download. The demonstrator, going by the handle of Planetbeing, stated that another member of the talented hacking crew is working on a different method to attain carrier unlock. Once both methods are sorted out the Dev Team will decide which to incorporate in its release.

While the Iphone 4 is available on many mobile operators here in the UK, in other countries, including the US, Apple has chosen to deal with just a single operator. The software unlock will allow many to purchase handsets through alternative means and not have to be tied to Apple's preferred operator that overcharges and kicks back a percentage to Jobs' Mob.

Although the demonstrated software unlock is currently not available for download, it's likely to be only days before it is released. Apple usually counters breaches of its shiny fortress by releasing software updates, and of course one is pending that will 'correct' the dodgy antenna on the Iphone 4, if you believe that some software fix can resolve a hardware design flaw.

In the meantime, Jobs' Mob will simply be hit with another dollop of embarrassment as once again its team of software coders gets outsmarted by a bunch of talented hackers. µ

Apple is hacking itself just like Sony and others do...

All these so called "hackers" and "crackers" are nothing more thank manufacturers themselves.
Just like Sony needed PSP "hacked" firmwares or Nintendo Wii needed Wii mod-chips or Microsoft needed XBox360 mod-chips and any other smartphone manufacturer needed "hacked" and "enhanced" firmwares...
It's just a viral marketing smoke screen. It's the manufacturer themselves that are releasing "hacked"/"cracked" firmwares and cracks for their own products.

Ummm...Sulis...

..Your argument is complete BS. Why? Because you're not taking into consideration sTeve jObs' larger-than-the-whole-universe and expanding-just-as-fast ego. If hIs uNholiness hasn't blessed it, it won't be tolerated. It really doesn't matter whether something is beneficial to the aPple cult user. That's not the issue. The real question is this: Did sIr sTeve think of it? No? Then sick the lawdogs on the infidel!

Beg to differ

I can't believe Apple would EVER be happy to have their phones cracked, allowing banned apps to be installed and used. Jobs and his empire have proven time after time what they think of apps that they feel unfit for their phones. It was Steve himself who recommended Android for those who wanted porn on their phones. Apple is way too imperialistic and controlling to be playing a cat and mouse game with hackers.

Apple WANTS IOS jailbroken...

Why on earth do you think that Apple doesn't want IOS jailbroken?

Of course, they have to seem to be putting up barriers, mainly for the benefit of the carriers (who are paranoid that people would actually use the data transmission they're paying for).

But the existence of a good jailbreak is pure win-win for Apple: it means that geeks can still happily buy iPhones to muck about with, but it also keeps the more crash-prone, battery-killing, smutty or memory-hogging apps well away from normal users who just want a phone that works (yes, let's leave the antenna thing out of this for now, shall we?).

So, jailbreaking is good for Apple, whatever they might protest. And I suspect they probably rather enjoy the duel with the hackers...
