Microsoft ends support for Windows XP SP2

Upgrade, if you care
Tue Jul 13 2010, 13:20

DEVELOPER OF BLOATED SOFTWARE Microsoft has ended its support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) systems, urging users to upgrade.

Support, primarily in the form of security updates, will end as of today, as the firm tries to usher its customers towards purchasing one of its newer operating systems. Windows XP SP2 users are recommended to either install SP3 or migrate to Windows 7. Not surprisingly, the Vole doesn't even mention Windows Vista.

Windows XP remains popular with users, with Microsoft claiming that 74 per cent of users chose to shun its Vista operating system and stick with XP. Now that Vista has ended up on the technological scrapheap, Microsoft is saying that, "In many cases the cost in time and effort for migrating to a new service pack will justify business and consumer interest in migration to Windows 7." Just whose business interest will justify spending a wad of cash on a new operating system, especially when you can simply install a free service pack instead, is an open question.

The firm insists that those running Windows XP 64-bit edition will receive support, as it never bothered to release SP3 for that version of the operating system. Microsoft said that support for that version will cease on 8 April, 2014.

Microsoft's much loved Windows XP operating system is not the only one to reach "end of extended support", with the Redmond company also withholding its continued support from Windows 2000 systems with SP4 installed.

In fairness to Microsoft, it has supported Windows XP for well over a decade, though in part it was forced to do so by the utter catastrophe that was its Vista operating system.

For those companies that are a bit hard up for cash and wanting to upgrade, there are numerous free Linux distributions to choose from instead. µ

@dave: Yes, M$ wrote OS/2 before they turned EVIL,

and only in profits. I've mentioned that previously here (just go_ogle), and am always happy to recount the history. -- M$ put their best into OS/2, as guided by IBM's experience with real computers. Bill said OS/2 was the future of computing. Then the accountants noticed that it'd be the last OS needed for a while -- as proven by that it is still useable in 2010 -- and M$ undermined it every way they could, aided by even IBM, which profited from Win31. M$ made a conscious decision to *not* advance computing. Except for their machinations, *you'd* have had *XP* level features in 1993! But they extracted every cent out of DOS for a decade.

You evidence a case of projection: it's *you* who can't admit that you were *suckered* into buying several versions of plain little single-tasking *DOS*. Or maybe the pitiably inept attempt to duplicate OS/2 that they called NT.

Win9x is crude in comparison to OS/2, especially the primitive FAT32 and its linear filename search: HPFS with its binary tree list is easily 100 times as fast searching for filenames, which *does* matter with a 1000 or so names. There are other excellent features like the included REXX is a real programming language that M$ has yet to match with its wacky PowerShell. -- Just a example statement of *facts*, not opinions.

Not an official troll? Darn, thought I had a live one. But I believe you, because I've noticed that mention of OS/2 chases off M$ trolls like holy water does to vampires.

Don't you know Microsoft created OS/2 in partnership with IBM. Infact most of the feature that you mentioned came from Microsoft. You should learn a little more about IT before you run your mouth and make your self look stupid.

I am not a troll, I am just telling the truth. A truth that you cannot admit beacause is would destroy everything that you hold dear (i.e rubish Operating systems).

If you dont like what I say then I suggest you go cry over the free copy of Debian that you got from the front of Linux Monthly.

@ dave: Don't you know M$ doesn't even admit OS/2 exists?

You are violating Company Policy. Go back to your M$ Official Troll Handbook, Enhanced and Revised.

I think your username says it all bigger_luddite. 0s/2 warp?? are you trying to out do the deluded linux zelots with your praise of a 3rd rate OS. // waits for BeOS and amiga workbench nerds to arrive.

In this modern information age there is only one viable and forward thinking OS. That kids is Windows. and when I say Windows I include everything from windows 95 up inc mellenium as it easly out performs linux OSX and all other wanabee OS failures.

@ dave: "an OS ... so way ahead of the curve"

That would be OS/2: 32-bit pre-emptive time-slice multi-tasking, High Performance File System broke the 2G barrier, ran almost all Win31 programs better than real DOS, real objects on desktop, included REXX for system programming, SMP version, all since 1993. -- While M$ sold you 6 or 8 versions of single-tasking DOS.

@ John

Dont you dare bring religion into this.

This is about Mactards and Linuxoozers hating on an OS and Company that are so way ahead of the curve in terms of what they bring to the masses that it makes them jelous.

I imagine you sitting in your moms basment huched over an old 486 running some obscure gui less flavor of linux, covered in bakebean juice and jizz wishing that you had a pc with enough horse power to run a proper OS like Vista.

Microsoft users (the whole world)laughs at you (the Minority) and rightly so......

What's a Service Pack?

As a IT engineer working for a popular electronic store in the UK, you'd be amazed at the number of customers who have no idea what a service pack is let alone what version they have in their Windows XP machine.

People come in and buy a USB addon and are baffled when it doesn't work and I ask them if they have Service Pack 3 in their PC.

They haven't a clue.

Time for Microsoft to use Critical Updates to prompt the user more strongly to install the latest Service Pack. If only to make my job a bit easier please. :-)

Get over yourselves and get a sense of humor. And while your at it, turn on your spell check so you don't look like utter morons when you correct others

And by the way, the Author writes just as many negative Mac articles as Windows. So what happens is there are mouth breathers just like you two screaming that he is anti-Mac and a PC fanboy in those articles and you two brain surgeons doing just the opposite.

It's almost sublime irony. Throw you both a bag of beef jerky and we have a redneck philosophy meeting....

@Jake

Before commenting how "badly worded" this article really is, I guess you should fix your grammar first -- just to add some credibility on your part.

"that's" and not "thats"

"you're" and not "your"

FWIW, I believe Windows 2000 is still the best Windows OS.

Upgrade to "Black XP" instead.

Or similar customized versions off torrent sites, already packaged with Firefox and other useful programs. The "Black XP" version cleans out *most* of the crap, down to about 700M as I recall, and on any decent hardware, boots from power-on to usable in just over a minute. It's also noticeably faster. -- Doesn't include numerous video drivers, though has a good array of network drivers that should get you online.

(I don't usually promote M$ products, heh, but it's interesting to see what *can* be done with the basics.)

Bad math

"it has supported Windows XP for well over a decade"

A decade is 10 years. XP has retail release date of October 2001 and I think RTM was August

So it has yet to celebrate its 9th birthday.

@Jake and Dave

Ahhhh, free lawyers here again.

I don't really understand how M$ and Apple get defendants from all over the place, when some one points out their shortcomings!!!!

You guys need to relax a bit...

Dear Jake, Dave

What poorly written comments! You windows fanboys. If Vista is not bloated and slow then why is it so unpopular?
