There's a significant school of thought that... Windows' success happened because of Solitaire - Wendy M. Grossman
MAKER OF SHINY TOYS Apple has admitted that the software update for the Iphone 4 antenna flaw will not fix the problem of dropped connections.
Steve Jobs has described the fact that people have to use the expensive gadget in their right hands, or hold it in just the 'right' way to avoid suffering signal losses, as a "non-issue".
However many expected that the software geniuses at Apple would create a fix for the problem.
Now according to Apple's favourite magazine Gizmodo, Applecare has confirmed that the upcoming software update won't fix the Iphone 4 transmission and reception problems.
Applecare is saying that the solution is to spend more money and buy a case or hold the phone just as Steve tells you.
Not that software was likely to fix a hardware design problem, but many Apple fanbois secretly believed that Steve would not force them to put up with a broken phone.
Instead Apple seems to think that a cosmetic change to the signal strength bar display will make users happy. But it won't.
Applecare three times confirmed to Gizmodo that the software update will not fix this antenna problem, only change the way the phone displays the available signal to make it more accurate.
Gizmodo is calling for Apple to issue free cases to fix the problem. Meanwhile Iphone 4 sales continue to go through the roof. Which sadly goes to show that Apple fanbois are not actually interested in buying a product that "just works", they are interested in buying an expensive object with a fruit logo on it.
You can read mindless justifications for Apple fanbois' stupidity in buying such a gadget in the comments below. Along with the usual claims that anyone who does not agree with their cult religion is somehow 'biased' and that the reporter must be completely wrong because The INQUIRER stylesheet spells Iphone in a way that Steve did not approve. µ
Maybe BP and Apple should band together and fix the worlds problems. Seems like they are both on top of their game.
The article is a statement of facts and so any percieved bias is irrelevant. Apple are trying to sell a product they haven't even finished designing properly. That is what is insulting, not Nick's article.
The saddest thing is that so many people moronically and unquestionably believe the Apple marketing factiod of continous product perfection even when widespread public evidence to the contrary is staring them in the face.
Paint it white, double the price, laugh your ass off.
Apple people like the majority do not read tech material. Apple people are "after the fact" people. Apple people research, after they buy their broken toys.
Love the article, especially love the last paragraph. ROFLMFAO
Now if all those folks posting about how they are never going to read the inquirer again, would stop commenting about the articles on the inquirer that they apparently aren't reading any more, then none of us would have to read their frothing and dribbling posts again either. Oh well, they I guess they are a source of amusement and catalyst point, so theres always a bright side
I greatly enjoyed this article, especially the last two paragraphs.
Brightened my day considerably.
Thanks, Nick!
hilarious!
Apple fanbois are not actually interested in buying a product that "just works", they are interested in buying an expensive object with a fruit logo on it.
Great article! The world appreciates articles that warn consumers about defective products that just "don't work". iPhone 4 was obviously a rush-job that was released in haste without proper and sufficient testing to meet quality standards.
Apple face stickers.
Fashionable, stylish while functionable. No more fat cheeks causing proximity sensor issues.
Such lame comments you can find here.
Yes, Nick is not a journalist. I consider him an "author" of articles. Just plain and simple.
I can see some people saying that Nick and Lawrence (or whatever) should be fired. Why?? Why would Inquirer fire the one author that really pumps up the site/page hits on every article that he writes???
People are lame enough to complaint about his bias and poor claims, but the fact is that those same people just keep coming back for more!! Now who's lame?... buahahahahha!
Go Nick! Just keep up the good work you're being paid for :P
Nick is the ultimate anti-Apple TROLL. For those of you critiquing his "journalism", let me stop you right there. It's NOT journalism.
Nick is just a two-bit hate blogger who should have been fired years ago.
I am still hoping he does, because he is a complete moron.
Oh, and we all know that "Lawrence Latif" is also Nick the Ferret.
Hello Inquirer,
I'm an Apple hater. I would love nothing more than to own an Android phone, but AT&T hates Android and I have a 20% discount with them. I can't afford to buy a phone off contract, so I'm stuck with what AT&T offers. Going by these criteria, the best phone on AT&T is the iPhone so grabbed one on pre-order. I am left handed. I have no problem with reception. This is because my large bear paws stiffle the reception of every phone I've ever had. To get over this I hold all cellphones in my finger tips away from the palm of my hand. So you see, this is really a non-issue for me. I really think this is just a bunch of people finding whatever they can to hate on Apple for. I will never own an Apple laptop or computer. They are just overpriced junk to me. This iPhone 4 on the otherhand, it was cheap and it's a very quality piece of equipment. I still would rather have a top of the line Andriod device, but this phone is still very capable. It works for me.
...are probably not the fanbois so much as the "normal" humans who, after three years of press, finally asked the nearest IT rat "This really browses the AOLs?"
And after 6 months of that, I am convinced that there does exist a subset of humanity for which Android (or a VCR, or a toaster) is in fact "too complicated." Though they're good at coming up with shoshin questions like "Why don't they make the broadband wider?"
Steve is spot on that this is absolutely not an issue. Most users don't even have 3G coverage, they must use the WiFi (but of course still pay for the ATT data plan).
WiFi antenna performance is fine, and if it isn't, just move closer to the wireless hotspot.
I took my iPhone 4 back for a full refund due to these problems, i then purchased a samsung galaxy s.
Had iPhone 4 since release date. Not one dropped call. Holding the phone exactly as always. I'm sure the issue exists but the fuss is over the top. The device is by far the best smart phone on the Market and everyone wants it. That's why the press are slamming it.
Oh how I chuckle at the comments here while marvelling at the plethora of features on my android HTC desire. You poor weak minded brainwashed fanbois fools make me laugh, an apprentice padawan would have fun practising their skills on your pea brains.
Oh and btw: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fanboi
Now we know why they call it the ‘Left Coast’, because obviously all of the geniuses’ in Apple’s R&D department are left-handed. It wasn’t until they sold it did they realize most people are right-handed, and not only that, but many watch Fox News. I am left-handed, however I think I’ll pass on the iPhone IV, sorry for the typo - Iphone. Android and Verizon are simply a superior OS/carrier combination and you need not put a condom on your HTC device in order to make a phone call.

All though there may be truth to this little Nicky's article, the way he goes about it is just plain unprofessional. The way he makes a point to tag the bottom of his "aticle" by calling out "fanbois" to comment just proves that he wrote this with the sole intention of cuasing a stir. Is this what online journalism has turned to? I am sure Nicky is all about causing trouble just so he can count how many comments he gets. I really miss the days when news was news and the opinions stayed in the opinion section. Some how I have a strange feeling that I am closer to a pulitzer than Nicky is. I am sure Nickyboi will comment to all his "coworkers" and claim that I am biased, but Nickyboi, that just isn't so. Unlike you, I am willing to try your so called product here and see for myself. I am not just running around the techno world claiming to have tried an iPhone and then just bashing it like you are. You should use some facts in your highly anticipated follow up article. Everything in your article can be found in about 200,000 other articles that came out before yours. So here's to you Nickyboi, keep on fighting that fight of yours.
This is how to correctly hold your iPhone 4:

:)
have a look through every article relating to Apple on this site and they're all the same.
Yes, the antenna is an issue, yes people are still buying them.
A so-called team of professionals resulting to name-calling is just childish
I'm no Apple fanboy, I don't like OSX and I think the iPad is a waste of money compared to even the most basic netbook.
That said, I happen to really like my iPhone and for Nick to claim all iPhone owners are "mindless" is just insulting.
I have a large collection of iPhone apps and games. I've looked at Android and the software support just isn't there. The basic phone may arguably be better (I'd say Flash support is the only real differentiator), but the meagre selection of games and apps just isn't good enough, and there's no guarantee all of them will run on a particular handset thanks to the fragmentation of the platform.
What else is there to choose from? Windows Phone 7? Not likely.
I'm not sure where I'll go for tech news from now on. Not the tame Apple sites that's for sure. The Inquirer hasn't been the same since they were bought out and started signing NDAs...
Goodbyeeee...
haha, love reading the noobs who flame nick. good luck, this geezer's cold as ice.
NICK IS OMNIPOTENT!!!
By writing among so many Apple fanboyism I feel like I have accidentally entered a trekkers convention or something nerdy like that.
That was a good fanboy fishing day, Nick.
but I gather that laying Scotch-tape all around the edge of the phone makes it work... if you have a decent cell service from your provider. Which, according to some commentators, you may not. Jon Stewart on [The Daily Show] appears to have had a love-hate relationship with an iPhone model and AT&T, although he's a clever fellow and probably would just go out and find something better. If he can.
Had an iphone 4 for a week now, not one dropped call or any reception problems.
Is this all just being blown out of proportion because people do't like how successful apple are?
OOO Fanboi's are out in force.
Guess what, that free clam phone you can get on any carrier is a iPhone killer, IT CAN MAKE CALLS muahaha
Since getting my iphone 4 on Friday I've looked at dozens of forums commenting on the relative merits & demerits of the iphone and its nearest competitors.
I know it's normally people with the stongest opinions who actually post online but I've been staggered by the venom aimed at Apple and its products.
I'm a fairly average punter and what I look for in a smart phone is ease of interface, speed of use, number of features and, not to be underestimated, beautiful design. The iphone 4 has all of these things in spades. Every unbiased comparison review I've read - and I've read many - puts the iphone at the top.
Don't forget that the majority of buyers have limited technical knowledge and it's for these people that Apple have an unerring eye
Is the story wrong or do you dismiss it because the author is biased? If the author is right it does not matter if he is biased. It seems to me that Farrell is full of the anger that you should be directing at Apple for flogging a broken phone rather than at him for not liking the company. I would not like a company that treated me like that, and I certainly would not call a reporter an idiot for revealing the fact to me.
the author of this article has a big issue with apple , its so biased
i have a cheap solution to the Iphone antenna problem
buy a cheap old nokia and put your sim into it and use it for calls and messaging
when you feel the need to show off your status or feel foolish, get your Iphone out and pose with it, pretending to speak to someone
I realise that highly inflamatory "journalism" is what this site pitches itself as but some of these articles are starting to get plain farcical.
While I do take some pleasure in any ball dropping in the fashist hype machine that is Apple all this reception talk is getting blown way out of proportion.
Might I direct you to a site with some real journalism that actually went to the trouble of getting to the bottom of the issue with numbers to back it up:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review
Read it and you will find the true reason for the "issues" people are seeing.
Yes the external antenna may be a dubious design decision but its not nearly the issue its being reported as. The real issue is just crap signal being reported as good signal by a software flaw.
I'm finding that in some reception areas I can go from 5 to 0 bars in seconds just by holding it in my left hand. In other areas it's rock solid, no matter how I hold it. Now here's the rub, in the area I got it to drop I usually get a good signal and certainly not 0-1 bars, so it's not dropping the 2 bars Apple are claiming it is, it's dropping almost completely. A colleague is having a terrible time with his but then he's left handed, which would make sense.
It seems to me to be a new iPhone feature, hopefully Apple is not patentig the way to hold an iPhone... Honestly when i am phoning i mostly use my sencond hand to do other things, this is mostly the right hand... but it seems to be an anti-stress feature some like single task or concentrate on your call... you have to use the right hand to make calls... ???
It could happen that many fans are more realistic and disappointed later... opinion flows and trends are very instable!
Sorry, take it back and reengineer it...
I suppose you could call me a so called FANBOI but im not a happy bunny with apple. Although i like their products and spend over the odds sometimes at least in the past i have got a well built product with no flaws. How apple can ask me to sign up to a £50 a month contract pay £30 for the handset and then tell me how to hold my phone or that i need to spend another £30 on one of their cases is beyond me. Your in danger of losing one of you so called FANBOI'S Apple 'SORT IT OUT'
Across 10 years I sold hundreds of thousands of pounds of Apple equipment to a variety of markets. During that time I never once met with apple in the UK beyond the usual ra ra sessions of hey here's a new product now go out and sell it to your user base and make us all some money.
At the end of 10 years when I eventually met the channel manager for all us authorized reseller I said nearly 10 years and I haven't seen you once.
He replied "I've got over 200 reseller I cant be expected to meet all of them."
I told him "I have over 200 customers and I've carried your box through the door of all of them!"
Now as a reseller we were fundamentally power users, Fanboys with a screw driver! We cried when they dropped Newton like trekkies in tears at the demise of a good character.
For me this is the true physics of the Apple Market Place. A forgiving fan base that colludes with the marketing engine of a company and who like druggies prepared to forgive their dealers anything. I saw this in my customers who bought duff apple product and I see it now in the speeches and excuses of all those faithful iphone users out there.
Apple's strength has never been their product its the people that use and DON'T use them. Its cool to hate Microsoft and love apple.
The market is king not the product, basically iPhone is just another mp3 player with a phone and a camera. The Inquirer is great for waking us up to the weaknesses and strengths of a product but the products are dictated by the users in the marketplace and its us users who need to evolve.

How can you take this article serious? When the author is blatantly bashing and obviously is bias. My Goodness, what respectable writer calls a group a 'fanboi'. Maybe its just the use with the i, instead of the y. I suppose this is journalism at its finest. Narrowcasting win?
when you spelled fanboy like "fanboi" and then repeated it over and over. douche move.
Just came off phone from t-mobile here in the UK as my phone is due an upgrade.
They told me they are refusing to release the phone while it has this antenna problem and that apple were considering a recall. If this recall is just a rumour I don't know.
O2 here are practically sold out in most shops with more stock delivred every few days only to be sold out again the same day.
Lol, are cases a good enough workaround?! This iphone is meant to be THE most futuristic expensive stylish phone in human history, and it needs a sad case to put on it to make it work, and look awful?!
Haha! Great article! Iphone blows, just like their Crapple computers. Why spend $4000 on a $1200 computer with limited software support? Fanbois are so retarded.
The comments in the articles seem harsh. Lots of name calling and Apple bashing. It just a bug in the product. Seems like Steve Jobs may have stolen this guys girlfriend or killed his dog. LoL
