BBC insults 'Facebook Saddos'

Seems like fair comment to us
Mon Jul 05 2010, 09:56

THE BBC appears to have forgotten to take its anti-INQUIRER pills and managed to insult the millions of members of the social notworking service Facebook.

BBC Sport accidentally launched a half-baked Olympics microsite with some unfortunate holding text still in place.

Next to a Facebook logo there was a sentence that read, "You can become a Facebook Saddo."

The problem was first noticed by the Media Blog, which commented that "somebody within the BBC still doesn't quite respect the audience it is seeking." We don't know quite what the problem is. Facebook is fairly sad, actually. It even has pages run by INQUIRER hacks.

Among the other highlights on the BBC's premature microsite, under the headline "A suitable strapline here", was a wall of names and faces where one bore very little relation to the other.

There is a Pakistan hockey player who does not bear a striking resemblance to the Queen and Sarah Menzies really does look like she has overdosed on testosterone. µ

Pathetic

I checked my Facebook profile after a 6 month hiatus and found 300 people that wanted to be friends with me, I don't know a single one of them, yay I have 300 imaginary friends....how pathetic.

South Park

I think that South Park covered the Facebook issue adequately.

B-b-b-but...

...on the whole, Facebook users ARE a bunch of wretched saddos?

It's really very clear to anyone who's used the site for more than five minutes that people who lead genuinely interesting lives DO NOT waste time making fatuous "yay england ftw!!!!!" status updates or uploading wonky camera photos of themselves holding a pint glass in the gloom of the local night club.

If you just want to revel in how much older your school friends seem compared to you, how ugly their kids look or how much smaller their gardens are, it's great. Otherwise it's a massive whirling pit of faux-social nothingness into which the more boring among us toss their spare moments in an attempt to appear newsworthy to other self-involved saddos who by definition don't give a fuck.

No surprise here...

this is typical of big media who cannot get their head around the concept of wisdom of crowds.

That your friends and ordinary people may have more of a clue about what is going on than their overpaid, arrogant, past their sell-by-date experts!
