BRITS RANK FOURTH in mobile advert consumption, according to the latest figures.
A report released by mobile ad and analytics firm Admob ranks the United Kingdom as the fourth largest consumer of mobile adverts, beating out countries such as Japan and China. Given that the three countries above the UK have considerably higher populations, it seems to suggest that we Brits are an advertiser's dream.
Admob, which has recently been given the green light to be acquired by Google, serves a large chunk of the global mobile advertising market. Therefore, its monthly figures provide an interesting window on how users' habits are changing.
The report also shows that in the past two years, mobile data traffic has ballooned as users move towards smartphones. Far more intriguing is data showing that Apple's Iphone is being surrounded by an army of Android devices.
The Admob report says that the Iphone is still the top consumer of its adverts, with the device accounting for almost 40 percent of all ads served to smartphones. However seven out of the top 10 smartphones are Android devices and, while a year ago just a single Android device accounted for 92 percent of all Android traffic, that same percentage is now made up of 14 devices.
Motorola's Droid still remains the top Android smartphone with HTC's various offerings accounting for the rest. Other manufacturers barely appear on the list with only Samsung's Moment making it into the list. Google's Nexus One made by HTC manages to pop up in the top 10, with the device accounting for just two percent of Android ad consumption.
The adverts served up by Admob are mostly through downloaded applications, an area where Apple is trying to muscle in with it's Iad software. These figures are prior to Apple releasing the Iphone 4 and Iphone OS 4, meaning it is likely that Android's impressive growth over the past few months will be slowed, at least in the short term.
Nevertheless, there is no question that 2010 is the year of Linux on smartphones. µ
Do the advertisers really think that we're gonna be clicking on their ads now that the networks have imposed such measly download allowances.
Force feed pointless ads on every page and they think we love it.
But then I the report is only published to justify their own existance
I keep wondering how long "advertising" will work, if it does, until a revolt is widespread over the constant intrusion and nagging. And what happens then? Does the Western world collapse when enough people aren't buying crap that they don't need?
So if I am walking down a crowded street and some deranged moron singles me out for a good slapping, am I the one who 'loves being hit' more than the others?
Just because ads are served, this doesn't mean they are loved or wanted.
