Samsung confirms Flash update for its Galaxy S

Android 2.2 is on its way
Wed Jun 30 2010, 13:02

KOREAN ELECTRONICS CONGLOMERATE Samsung has announced that its Galaxy S mobile phone will be updated to Android 2.2.

samsung-galaxy-sCurrently being flogged by Vodafone, the Galaxy S handset had its first outing at the wireless telecoms industry association CTIA event in March. Since then, the 4-inch touchscreen phone with a 1GHz processor and 16GB of memory has been in a state of flux, only arriving on these shores a few weeks ago. The news of Samsung's intention to update the phone to Android 2.2 will be music to the ears of those who want to plump for the Galaxy S instead of other devices that run the Linux based operating system.

Android 2.2 brings a number of features to the table including out-of-the-box tethering support. However it is support for Adobe's Flash software that makes Android 2.2 the must have mobile phone software of the summer.

One might hope that this will be the start of Samsung and other handset manufacturers taking on the job of keeping their expensive high end smartphones up-to-date with current versions of their respective operating systems.

This week saw Android 2.2 finally start to be deployed to Nexus One owners. However Samsung, like other handset manufacturers, won't be tied down to a specific date for rolling out updates at this point. µ

First for Samsung

Seems like Samsung has started listening to its customers. But I will still wait till I see it with my own eyes . Hope users do not end up with Bada instead of Android 2.2. The less the fragmentation of Android, the better for everyone.

At least you can get the phone

Here in the states, apparently finding any of the new kit (uncrippled) is virtually impossible.

The phone companies are flogging yesterdays tech at tomorrows price...

Which is why I don't yet have an android based phone

I'd certainly be more inclined to by an Android based phone if I knew it was going to be kept up to date as far as possible for at least 24 months after I bought it. Better still a system of manufacturer independent updates so it Is guaranteed. At the moment my iPhone 3GS will do fine for the next 12 months with it's Neely updated os.
